Pizza boxes

Several months ago I read on the Board about using Pizza boxes for storage of projects...went into pizza parlor and asked about purchasing several...they were free...couldn't beleive it...such a great idea...I have alot of my fabric already cut up for special quilts...these are just made for that..Whoever mentioned these boxes is a "hero to me. Thanks!

One of the first classes I took years ago, the teacher gave it as a tip. She kept all her course materials/notes/samples in each box, stacked and labelled the ends for a quick prep each time.

Instead of leaving them as is ... I cover them with adhesive plastic, and put a long shoelace thru as a tie.
Makes it a little more durable, plus of course, prettier! :)
Works perfect to take WIP for Show & Tell or to audition extra fabrics at the LQS.

i only have one box... but it is just the ticket for a wip. i'll have to try the 'free' trick at the pizza place.

DogHouseMom 01-21-2013 09:54 AM

QuiltE ... I like the idea of putting shoelace through it as a handle!!

I'll have to get an asortment of sizes from my local pizza joint.

Not so much a handle ... but to klutz-proof it for me, so I don't dump the precious contents into a snowbank ... or mud! :)

A photo .... a boot or skate lace does the trick.
It's all inside the box except for the short sides ... and inside can be used to thread overtop your blocks to hold them them place when taking them on a FART!

Ahhhh!! I see!! I like that idea to keep the blocks secured to the "floor" of the box.

susiequilt 01-21-2013 02:45 PM

I had to pay a quarter for mine for I love them.

valleyquiltermo 01-21-2013 03:08 PM

QuiltE what lovely boxes and a very inventive ideal to secure the contents and the lid. LOVE IT.. 0;-)

wraez 01-21-2013 03:13 PM

you were fortunate to get them for free. my family owned a pizza shop and those boxes aren't cheap ... maybe it was given to you in good will and hoping you'd be a good customer.

ckcowl 01-21-2013 03:17 PM

i was getting them free one at a time for a bit- then one of the (family friend kids) went to work at a pizza place & i asked about purchasing a bunch---the owner was nice enough to order me a bundle of 50 large boxes- with no logo---for $20 ... i like the idea of using the adhesive plastic- i used fabric to cover a few- but the plastic would be easier...and just as nice.

QuiltE 01-21-2013 04:06 PM

CKCowl ... sometimes I fight with the plastic! ... but it's prettier, so well worth it!

DHMom ... yup, holds it all together and avoids that slip sliding away that can happen. Totally designed by moi! No copyright though! :)

Now here's chuckle for you ....
........... one time I took a "naked" pizza box to the LQS, and some lady thought it was disgusting that I would use an "used" box for my blocks. Hellloooooo ... do you see any pizza stains. I've never gotten pizza without! I decided then, that the plastic adhesive was a must do!

romanojg 01-22-2013 05:20 AM

I started doing this as a tip from my teacher when doing the watercolor quilts. I even covered them with contact paper for looks and stability

It is good to line the pizza box with paper towel that is made for microwaves. It is acid free. This makes it good for the fabric, especially if it is left in the box for a while.

ljptexas 01-22-2013 06:45 AM

I am using several. If there are any grease stains, I just cover the bottom with foil... Great for keeping finished blocks flat....

chislett 01-22-2013 06:56 AM

At our quilt guild we have a Pizza Box Challenge. Those taking part brought in a pizza box with a block pattern and fabric they would like to see in all of the blocks. At each meeting boxes are exchanged and you get to make a block for someone else based on the theme they have chosen. You use a piece of their fabric and some from your own stash to complete their block. It is a lot of fun because so far the blocks I have made I have not done before and when finished I will have a quilt with the work of others. Being a new guild member it is a nice way of getting to know your quilting friends.

Bought mine at Sam's club. The local pizza place said they had to account for theirs at inventory time. Now I have plenty for quilting and other crafty things. So far, there are thirteen stacked and filled with projects :D

Brought my blocks to quilt in a Johnny's Pizza box and was quickly informed I'd better have pizza next time I brought a box like that in! It is best to disguise the box!

Sounds like my bunch. haha One time I sprinkled cinnamon in a pie pan and put it in the oven with some other stuff that was cooking. My husband came home, sniffed, then asked where the apple pie was. Needless to say, he wasn't a happy camper. haha

Geri B 01-23-2013 08:03 AM

Last time I needed boxes for a class I bought them from a local pizza parlor for 50 cents each. I know how expensive paper products are. May be more now. First time I asked for one it was for a memory box to put grandkids drawings in and I promised a painted box in return - that one was free.

red-warrior 01-23-2013 02:28 PM

I also use the plastic boxes with lid that my spring mix lettuce comes in. I can store fabrics for a given project,so I on't use one in something else. they are clear and you can see from the outside what project is in there!

katykwilt 01-23-2013 03:44 PM

Great minds do think alike. I covered a series of the largest size with contact paper, then put felt or unused batting on the inside. Used this to carry my project in the camper and used the inside as my design boards. This week I used the same technique on some smaller boxes from Omaha Steaks that I plan to use for small items, feet, etc. that belong to individual sewing machines. I have 20, mostly vintag,e and want to keep what belongs where it belongs, so the machine and the box/es will be put in its own case w/rollers.

Thanks for the idea!

In Rockford IL you can buy plain white pizza boxes at Gordon Food Service. Not sure of the price.
