I'm not a knitting expert, but aren't 24 inch circular needles too long to make a preemie hat? Perhaps I don't understand how you use them. We talked about double pointed needles, but thought the easiest pattern would be to knit a flat hat and sew up a seam.

Why not use 24 inch circular needles. I never use straight anymore. I find the circular easier to handle without the long ends weighing down and getting in the way. Also, you'll always have a pair since you can't lose one needle.

I knit 3 needle patterns and use bamboo double pointed needles. I was used to using metal ones and when I went to buy a set all they had was bamboo so bought those. I really like those much better.
Would they consider a wooden needle a weapon? I'm assuming that is why you need plastic rather than metal. |
I don't know where you live but if it is in a cold climate then mittens are a good option too. There are patters for two needle mittens that are easy to make. When I taught people how to knit I used a two needle mitten pattern. It has everything you need to know. Knit and Perl in the ribbing, increasing and decreasing for the thumb and tip of mitten, sewing up a seam plus they are small enough project it doesn't take forever to get them done. Shelters where it gets cold can always use mittens.
