WOW ! But I can't help but think whoever did that didn't realize that maybe the stamps were worth more to a collector ? It would be interesting to see if they still have any value ?

Wow!! That is incredible. I don't think they knew what they had. Probably just using up mom and dads old stamps. Yikes!!!

WOW! OMG! I agree that somebody died and this is part of their collection. Look at the dates of some of those. Oh gosh. My dad collected stamps.

I do hope you're not tossing them! Even cancelled, collectors still want them. Please find someone who wants them.

I think it is a sign you need to start stamp collecting.

I grew up in the next town north of Hyde Park, and I remember those Lincoln stamps, too. I can't believe they crammed that many on an envelope!

What a sad, sad, shame that this person didn't atleast try and sell these...and the irony it was from someone on Ebay!!!! :roll:

Kinda neat, I would keep the envelope just a as a novelty item. Just cause the stamps are old doesn't mean they are valuable.
I once got a package from eBay wrapped in muslin with stamps on it, it was from India.

I sent this link to a friend - stamp collector. She looked up the price - to buy unused and in mint condition the sheet of 70 stamps was $25. So the seller used $1.40 in face value for postage when she could have sold the sheet for 10 times face value. Friend didn't tell me the value once they're cancelled.

And all those blocks of 4 - :shock: You should be able to sell that envelope as is with all the cancelled stamps on it to a collector.

Yup, probably found grandma's stamps. Like I did. No value really, I checked and even checked if they would sell on ebay....when you figure in the cost of listing etc you don't even make what the face value of the stamps.

But the PO will still accept them on envelopes and packaging.

Now if there are any valuable ones on there I'd like to know, LOL,,,,I have a box full of them too, in sheets.

I thought this was extremely strange, but I showed it to my husband & he said it used to be quite common.
Collectors would buy a collection to get a particular stamp, then just use the other stamps for mailing.
He also said the Lincoln profile stamp was from a series starting in 1938 that had profiles of all the Presidents in order & number sequence. Washington was 1 cent, being the first president; Lincoln was 4 cent being the 4th president. he said the series went through the 1950's and that is how he learned the order of US presidents!

I sent the photos to a friend of mine who is a stamp collector, and below are her comments:

I looked up just a couple in my Mystic Stamp Catalog. The Martha Washington 1 1/2 cent one sells for .30 cents-Mint condition, 15 cents-Used condition. (This one is from the 1938 Presidental Series.) Then, the Abraham Lincoln one is from 1954-61 series, Mint condition .40 cents, Used condition .15 cents.

So there is some info for those who are curious!

Thanks for the info from a stamp collector, but I've found that those are the prices that you can 'buy' the stamps from a collector, not what they will pay someone to acquire the stamps. So 'they sell for' doesn't necessarily mean that is the price that we can get for them?

Kinda like a used bookstore or other kind of collectible place. They pay low prices and turn around and sell higher..because of overhead etc.

Maybe verify that?

This is probably the most unusual post I have seen on this forum! I have some of my mom's old stamps, but I wouldn't think of using them.

WOW!! that's a lot of stamps. Do you collect stamps? My daughter has a collection and I am always trying to find them for her. Don't throw those away!!! Find a friend or someone that collects and you could probably sell them!!!
