Power outages

I hope our US members without power in this winter storm stay hunkered down and safe until the power is restored!

Sew Girl 2 02-16-2021 06:23 AM

It is so-o-o cold in Texas. We aren't used to having snow and temperature below freezing. Several of our friends are without electricity, but we have been lucky so far. They shut down some of the wind turbines, wonder how we will have electricity once we go all wind and solar? Our houses aren't built for this kind of weather so the furnace runs all the time. Pray that is warms up real soon.

My thoughts, too. I heard that the wind turbines actually were frozen.

Janey - Neat people never make the exciting discoveries I do.

Very cold here--water lines ( not our pipes ) have been frozen for days. We do have electric though. Some areas are without either. Neighbors trying to help neighbors if we can. More icy conditions for next few days. Such horrible times.

Jingle 02-16-2021 11:21 AM

We have never had these conditions in the 62 years I have lived in MO.

I hate the thought of alternate fuel for important things. The old way works the best. We still have power and I am thankful. I feel sorry for all the people going though this historical weather.

Our electricity has now been out for two days. It was minus 1 this morning, 40 degrees in the house......then yesterday we were informed that we now need to boil our water, since a water plant's electricity when off, now their equipment is frozen. Thank goodness we have gas a cooktop. My neighbors are all electric, so now they and their two small children will have to look for a hotel and drive on frozen roads...good luck with that . This is ridiculous. We live in Keller, TX, just northeast. Of downtown ft. Worth. The electric grid ERCOT are not doing rolling black outs as they have stated,, where the electric company turns the power off then, back on for a few hours the off again.. They have turned it off, PERIOD! they said today prepared for more days without power....in other words, get used to it. And NO ROLLING BLACK OUTS. we could deal with off and on electricity, now boil water......get out on icy roads to find water..... that is what we get with a governor wanting Green , wind turbine electricity......to the detriment of our citizens, BUT GOV. ABBOTT picked up the "GREEN ENEEGY AWARD last week! We learned yesterday on the news that Texas.govennor. ERCOT planned tn
that Texas Needed to be 25% windenergy ....how's that working for you? IT ISN'T! RENEWABLE, GREEN, ENEEGY IS DISGUSTINGLY UNRELIABLE. Ask. Any Texan.....they could not provide 100% electricity after one day of sub freezing weather. NO TO GREEN ENERGY.

redbreast 02-16-2021 03:11 PM

All you folks in the Texas area really have my utmost sympathy. Believe me I can fully imagine
what you are going through and how miserable you feel. I grew up in central Wisconsin and am living in
in Illinois now and you should hear me complain about all of the snow and COLD weather. When I read
your problems I really feel foolish. Hang in there; we are wishing you warmer weather and soon!

SusieQOH 02-16-2021 05:12 PM

We had a storm last night. I put my flashlights on my nightstand, just in case.

sewingsuz 02-16-2021 07:05 PM

I am praying for all of you with this shocking weather, I am glad you all make quilts but you cannot stay under them for 24/7. don't need all of this with all the other stuff that is going on.

Your power grids aren’t regulated either are they? Maybe need to be on the national grid? The turbines were defrosted and last I heard they are operational.

One of my friends has a son in Texas without power and three little kids. There was a suggestion that I thought worth repeating. If you have a tent, set it up in the living room and move in with all the quilts etc. Make one big bed and keep each other warm. The tent will hold some heat in. The kind that has a rigid frame.

I'm here in South Texas. Boil your water? With no electricity? A broken water main has reduced flow to a trickle, and service has been cut to some areas in an attempt, for the second day, to find the break!! The Coastal Bend is not set up for freezing weather. We have electricity, but many do not; we only lost power for a few hours. Grocery store shelves are not bare, they are empty!! Panic purchasing.
1,800+ cold stunned sea turtles have washed to shore here in Corpus-approx. half were still alive

Thankfully, temperatures will return to the 60s next weekhttps://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/smile.png

Sew Girl 2 02-18-2021 06:08 AM

I am so sorry to hear about the sea turtles. This weather is really hurting the animals. The Dallas Zoo lost some animals, ranchers are losing calves that are being born. Ranchers are having problems cutting ice for the cattle to drink. Maybe God is telling all of us we have had it too good. It really makes a person appreciate electricity, water and great neighbors. I live in the DFW area and we are having to boil water, but we are so blessed as I stocked up on food and water before all this happened. I am hoping that this may slow the virus down as everyone is having to stay home at least. Have to look at the good side of things. .

tropit 02-18-2021 06:15 AM

OMG...I've been worried about all of you. Please stay safe and warm. It's a good time to do a lot of hugging and snuggling.

That's a really good idea. May I add a couple more tips to that? If you are able to boil snow, put the hot water into big, milk jugs and keep those in the tent until they cool. Cover the tents with quilts for added insulation. Just some ideas.

Here in Iowa and the midwest, we received even colder temps, down in the -20 to -30's and we have wind turbines also but they didn't have issues with freezing so wondering why the turbines in TX did? I pray for those in TX right now as I know what it feels like to be cold all the time. My neighbors spend winters in TX. Just texted them to see if they are okay but haven't heard from them yet. I know my nephews down in Waco have had problems.

Even though I live in the north we have learned once the temps start to drop we always fill the bath tub with water so we have something in the event that conditions get the way they are right now. My heart is going out to all of you that have to deal with this horrible weather that you have never had to deal with. Please stay safe.

juliasb 02-18-2021 09:11 AM

This is so mind boggling and unimaginable that you all have to go through this. I hope that you all have plenty of quilts to help you cuddle and keep warm. Hopefully the power will be back on SOON! My thoughts are with all of you.

gale 02-18-2021 10:23 AM

Praying for everyone in TX and anywhere else the weather has been brutal. We were hit with a snowstorm recently but we're used to it. I can't even imagine having to deal with this in a state where it's not a normal occurrence.

If the Energy companies that plan to provide for energy winterize their equipment - be it renewable or fossil fuel - , it won't be a problem. Sweden has already sent word that if the fan blades have a thin coating of carbon fibers, they can warm the blades sufficiently to prevent them from icing up. They use wind turbines successfully at the Arctic Circle so with a little planning, this does not have to happen to Texans again. Your energy company didn't winterize any of the equipment. Sad that everyone has to suffer because of their desire to make money and not provide a stable product to its customers. Global warming has been coming for a while. Ignoring that it allows for arctic blasts like this one is not fair to everyone who rely on businesses to be mindful.

I hope everyone has quilts to keep them warm until it gets warmer outside.
