prayer flags
 

recently I stumbled upon a free pattern for a"prayer flag" . Its new to me,although looks like its been around for quiet a few years. Is anyone in here making the prayer flags and where do you display them?

Never heard of them before. On the internet:"A prayer flag is a colorful rectangular cloth, often found strung along mountain ridges and peaks high in the Himalayas. They are used to bless the surrounding countryside and for other purposes. Prayer flags are believed to have originated with Bon."

Yes and Pinterest has a lot of them. Around here garden flags,made the same way, are popular in summer.

There are prayer flags in this country, too. Out west, when we were on a tour with an Elderhostle, we saw fabric hanging on the bushes. We were told not to touch them as they were the prayer flags of the Native Americans. I've seen them several places now.

Prayer flags have been around a very long time. They are an ancient tradition from Tibet.

Interesting! We have some new neighbors down the block and they have hung very colorful prayer flags in their back yard. We just noticed them the other day, and another neighbor explained what they were. Had not seen, or heard of them before.

Haven't seen any un the UK but will keep eyes peeled.

Our oncology chaplain brought the idea of prayer flags to our clinic about 5 or 6 years ago. She distributed rectangles of pastel color and handed them out to all the patients in the infusion room, along with colored markers, pens, etc. Each patient could put whatever they felt like on the flag. When completed, the chaplain took them to have a small hem/pocket at the top and they were strung on a line and hung from the ceiling of the infusion room. she kept this going for a long time, so that whenever a new patient started chemo, they also were able to make their own flag and have it hung overhead with the rest.

Have not seen them but think it's a great idea.

Native Americans make tobacco ties. You need the following items fabric (red, black, yellow and white), some string and loose tobacco (like Bugle or whichever is in your area). Cut squares (I make 3" ones) place a small amount of tobacco in the center of each square. Tie it up (it should look like a small ghost) place it in the following order:
east (yellow), south (red), west (black), and north (white). I usually place mine on a 6" grapevine wreath. But you can hang them from a string. I hang mine near the doorways of each room and at the front door of our house.
The colors represent the four directions (wind).
