I buy it by the case from Sam's and re-package in zip lock bags. Then to the chest freezer they go ... a 90 lb case has been lasting us 6 to 9 months. It is kind of a pain, but the $3.99 in the store is a bigger pain! Price per pound is just over $2/lb this way. Bought a side of beef once ... great steaks and cuts of meat cheaper, but I didn't like the hamburger ... and that is what we are used to eating.
Oh, and when I defrost ... I tend to cook the hamburger for the week with onions (like what doesn't taste better with onions!) and I will throw in a little TVP as an extender. Shhh! don't tell hubby and the kids. |

the other thing i like about re-packing ground meat (besides the price) is that i can flatten out the packs and stack them like boards. they take up much less room that way and i can take advantage of the next sale. dh makes fun of me, but that's partly what pays for his vacations. it all adds up. soon, the garden will start producing. nothing like a good jersey beefsteak tomato.

Okay, figure this out...our same store that had 80% lean last week for $3.99 per pound now has 94% lean for $1.99!!!!
yes, I too am looking forward to fresh garden veggies, have started my seeds and as soon as the ground can be plowed I'm ready. :) |

I always look at the clearence on the meat. by the way I have bought round steak and you can grind up in your food processor and you will have lean ground beef.

Read "Fast Food Nation", that will put you off from eating commercial hamburger any more. I know it had that effect on me.

I need to try the veggie burgers again. Hadone a LONG time go, and didnt much care for it, but everyone says theyve gotten better. We buy the crumbles sometimes.
