Quilt group looking for parade ideas!
Our park( 55 & over!) has a Mardi Gras parade each year & our quilt group of (20 - 30 ladies) need ideas on how we could participate. Some would be walking & some would ride in golf carts. Any suggestions on themes, decorations or costumes would be appreciated! This is just a short fun parade!

get out your Christmas tree skirts and wear them as capes over your shoulders!
Colors for Mardi Gras Gold, Green and Purple themes.
Carry some wall hangings on poles, or attached to side frames of golf carts, or maybe a barn quilt block?. Wear Vests and other clothing made in Patchwork styles. Make some small pincushions to toss to the crowd? |
How about wearing some cute aprons? You could use fabric with sewing themes like buttons or spools.
Make some poodle skirts & go as the 50s girls. Some that are able to walk ( strut your skirts ) those that need scooters can ride the scooters. Sounds like FUN !!!
Since it is Mardi Gras, what about the walkers carry patchwork umbrellas with fun tassels? I would just make some kind of temporary cover since it is only one day. Maybe make some cute doggy coats for those with pets?
How about bunting to tie around the top of golf buggies. Bags totes etc to carry . Quilts over your knees . Make patchwork clothes to wear.
Make the four patch coaster and throw those out to the crowd.
Cover the top of golf carts with quilts?
beads are always being thrown/worn during the parades so maybe make some fabric bead necklaces with a mardi gras theme.

A quilted banner or flag with a Mardi Gras theme---nice fabric available last few years. Masks are a great theme. Also have the participants buy or make masks...You can usually go to a party store and buy some inexpensive ones (then glue on cotton fabric that looks as if it's quilted. Add a few feathers and beads. Another idea would be to have a "quilt queen" on your golf cart--all decked out in a long silky dress, a fabulous mask and crown and a cape fashioned from a quilt, Have a great tikme!
. Mardi Gras parades are lots of fun. |
Your quilt group sounds like a hoot! I wish I could play with you!
I love the suggestion of quilted parasols. That would be fast and easy to do. I'd bet you could basically make a smallish Christmas tree skirt pattern out of Mardi Gras fabrics and put it on your umbrella. Maybe some ties to hold it on. |
Make stuffed blocks out of scrapes and add to your throws!! Have fun!
Bunting, bunting and more bunting.
The mug rugs, little finger or small pin cushions, fabric necklaces would be great for throwing to the crowd. Everyone in the group could make just a few of these. You could also have someone pin fabric all over their clothing & be a walking fabric stash or runaway fabric. Sounds like it is a fun occasion.

Our local group made a quilted cover for one of the member's van. You can see examples if you google quilted car covers.
