Quilt Show Entries - What is Considered a Special Technique Quilt?
 

Is paper piecing considered a "special technique" for a quilt show? Or would that just be considered general piecing? I've been working on this quilt literally for over a YEAR to put in a local show. I'm getting so nervous now the date to enter is quickly approaching!

I entered in a show this fall, the class was "a quilt with at least two different techniques". I had one with a little applique and was tempted to sew some beads on to get my 2nd technique. Read closer, and it said, eg. piecing, applique (and gave some more). ummmmmm ... piecing, a technique? I would never have entered that class, but the sub comments said so.

There was another class that again, I wouldn't enter normally just from reading the info. I spoke to the contact and asked questions ...... suddenly, I was entering more classes!

So speak up, and check what they mean ..... rather than entering and being disqualified, or being disappointed when you discover the winning quilt is a mate to yours!!

There should be a definition of each category in the show, so no one gets confused. I don't think paper piecing would be considered a "special technique," but I could be wrong. Good luck in the show!

Special technique quilts for our local quilt show are defined as quilts with piecing and/or applique and one other technique such as beading, painting, embroidery.

tchniques are often-
pieced
paper pieced
appliqued
mixed technique (where more than on technique is used)
embellished
hand pieced
hand quilted
machine quilted
all of the shows have specific rules- and guidelines- it is important to check them- and follow them

I did read through the guidelines and they aren't terribly thorough. Some of the examples given for "special technique" were yo-yo, embroidery, crazy quilt...so I'm thinking my project is not considered a special technique. LOL* This is my first experience and it's pretty intimidating! I want to be sure I list it in the right category! :)

As I mentioned in my earlier post ... don't go with what you think. Talk directly to someone and check.
If I'd gone with what I thought was "right" for the shows I entered this fall, there's several I would NOT have entered ..... and some red/first ribbons that I would not have received. I'm glad I did!! So, please do not be intimidated, and do not fear asking.

It seems every show has different ideas depending upon who is in charge.

For sure ..... and too, even within the show, the interpretation can be different from one person to the other.
So it's important to make sure the info you are getting from the "right" person.
And it doesn't stop there, as the Judge may have a totally different interpretation, if it's not clearly defined in the show's rules/guidelines/parameters.
