quilts a bit different
Last Sunday on "Sunday Morning" (hosted by Jande Pauley now) she talked to a guy that makes quilts. A bit different than we usually see, but shows me that quilts are definitely an expression of the maker.
Did anyone else see it? http://www.benvenom.com/press/ I cannot find a video of the actual show, but this is the guy. |
I didn't see it but was curious & found this article.
http://www.cbsnews.com/news/a-collis...nd-rock-music/ You are right by stating that quilts are an expression of the maker. Ben is to much on the dark side for me but we all have to express ourselves in a way that speaks to us. |
Wow! Those are some amazing quilts! What an interesting guy, I like that he's bringing the quilting world into a new arena.
I grew up with a few "hard" looking biker guys in the family, but they were good people who did charity rides and the like - they would have LOVED some of these quilts. Quilting really is for everybody. :) |
i saw that show... his quilts scare me a bit... but each to his own

Not my cup of tea, but he is talented.
Agreed - a tad on the dark side but certainly talented.
I saw it. He did an amazing job. His quilts are a different style than mine but I can appreciate the time and work he puts into them.
Well isn't this what we always say, "Press to the dark side".
As it is not my style, I feel enriched having watched the clips and I feel inspired to find my style
Thanks for sharing, |
Agree with QuiltnNan and QuiltsRfun.
Whoa! I may not like his art style, but he is definitely talented and I love that he's doing it.
I too saw it. Amazing talent. Not my taste but was obviously someone's. It should be on the CBS web site under Sunday Morning.
I take care of seniors and one of my ladies ( 95 years old) is so ( smitten) with Ben's quilts! She saw a couple on the program she really wants. :) they are pretty amazing.
I did see it and the quilts were amazing.....I'm glad u posted this because I had meant to and forgot....thanks...
Ya know what? Good for him! If it keeps him off the streets, and he can enjoy the love and inner warmth that piecing and quilting gives us all...GREAT!!!!!
Don't you love how in the film clip at the bottom he says people always think he's not the quilter, that he has a "garage full of grandmas" quilting for him? Not sure I like that classification, even if it is largely true and I fit it.
Not all my style but I love that his art is quilting and living a re purposed life.
peace |
I saw that piece. I thought his quilts were awesome. His quilts are not for everyone, but then I see quilts everyday on this board that I do not like. You really have to admire his work.
To me his quilts are no more "out there" than the ones made with skeleton fabrics, etc.
To each is own - but they are amazing! |
They aren't my style either although a few of them I really liked. He is very talented though.
I think it's great to see a young man quilting. Subject matter isn't important, it's the talent he has. I wish I could sell quilts for that much money!

When I was finished watching it, I thought of my daughter. She's 29 now, but there was a time in high school when she was going through a somewhat dark phase. She died her hair black, wore black. Spent a lot of time in her room.
I watched her closely, but never got a sign that an intervention was needed. She skipped the 8th grade - asked me and I told her if she did all that was involved to do this, then it was ok with me. She was off for 6 mos because of scoliosis surgery when she was a sophomore, but still graduated a year ahead and was 3rd in her class. She got her RN degree and took classes while she worked that she needed to apply to med school. It seems med school may no longer be her goal, but said she's meeting whatever the college said she needs to meet to take graduate classes. (All through this, she had a 4.0) She never made quilts, but was very artistically talented. Rock music is her thing too. I have an example of a drawing she made in college, typical of her art. I still sort of keep an eye on her, as much as possible because she moved out, but she says she and her boyfriend, an educator type, are going to get married. |
