I am embarrassed to admit that I don't know this, but: When I need to have fasting blood drawn do I take my medication in the morning before the test?
What is the blood test checking? What time if your appointment? What are your medications?
My dh has fasting blood draws on a regular basis... he waits till after the blood test to take his medications with his breakfast... |
I think it depends on what type of meds they are but I am not certain
if itis a oral med, then no, u do not take.... u take the meds when u get home or take with u and take after the blood work........
You should really call your clinic or the doctor's office ; to get the right info.
We have had several reasons for having blood tests, and each time was told to take the meds. However, we could only take small sips of water only, so difficult to swallow the pills. Always waited after the testing. Made sure the appts were always around 7 or 8 am.

Chlestrol(probably spelled that wrong) and blood pressure
I think I better call in the morning. Thanks for your quick replies. I knew you folks could help.
they always tell me to just do my insulin but not anything with water!
Most times you can take your meds before the blood draw. Some meds need food with them, those would wait. (R.N. since 1959)
For all of my labs, my Dr said I could take all of my pills with sips of water only, before testing. Just no other beverages or food for 8-10 hrs before. It may vary with indiv. Drs or the meds the patient is on. Play it safe and just ask. I hope all will be just fine with the tests. I get mine done every 6 mos.
It depends call your doctor in the morning.

Yup, I would check if I were you!
Check with your doctor. I don't take mine because they're supposed to be taken with food.
Ask your doctor. If it's too late to do that, just take your meds with you so you can take them right after the test.
Having worked in a medical laboratory for 35 years I can tell you that you can take your medication with water before a fasting test, unless your doctor has specifically told you otherwise. However water is all you can have.
Ask the doctor!
There is no such thing as a dumb question, just a dumb person who doesn't ask! I normally take my meds after the fasting blood test as it is normally early in the morning, but if in doubt ring up your nurse and ask, she won't mind as she will have been asked the same question 100s of times before :-D
You need to contact your doctor. I've been told that if I have meds to take them w/a little water. If you are taking meds that would affect your health without it you should probably be taking it. So, Please talk to your doctor to make sure.
I take my meds at night so that's not the issue. I was told that water doesn't affect the fasting tests I take, so I always have some, because it is hard to get a needle in me anyway and being dehydrated makes it worse.
Ask doctor.
I was told the fasting tests would be better with 12 hours between the last meal and the test. I can drink water and take a snack with me so I'm not too weak afterwards.
In fact, that's what I'm doing right now, waiting for another quarter hour or so till I can leave for a blood test, the first one since 2005. Finally getting around to having things checked, since I pay every month a bundle to Blue Shield, thought I might get some use from it. |
call your doctors office the nurse will know.
I wait until after my blood test.
Usually you can take all meds before the test.
Just had blood drawn (thyroid and cholesterol) yesterday and my doc said I could take the pills before hand.
Please ask your doctor about this. Also ask if you can drink fluids/water before any blood test. Most blood tests require fasting, and have nothing to do with fluid intake.
If you're allowed to drink water, drink a lot of it (at least 2 glasses) about one hour before your blood draw! You'd be amazed at how many tests still allow you to drink water. It's so much easier to perform blood tests on well hydrated patients!!! |
