I just bought my new great niece twins each a baby doll by Gund...they are very soft and safe with embroidered eyes.

Most toy stores have a "first" baby doll. They are completely washable, and don't have hair to mess up LOL I think they run around $15 - $20 :D:D:D

Cabbage patch Dolls are great. They have names, you adopt them and "Grammy" can easily make clothes!

The one that came to mind is called a dressy bessy. Teaches them how to work zippers, buttons etc. Don't know if they even make them any more. Also is machine washable.
