Red Heart Super Saver Yarn

It seems like the different colors have different "hefts"

I have been knitting squares that will be assembled into baby/toddler blankets, and some skeins/colors will yield 3+ squares and some skeins/colors yield not quite 3 squares.

I have a postal scale that can weigh in grams and my finished squares have turned out to be slightly different sizes (although each color is fairly consistent) and they do weigh more or less - depending on the color.

Just a heads up for anyone using this yarn.

I think my tension is fairly consistent - so I think it is the yarn that is causing the differences.

Doesn't surprise me at all. I will pass this info onto others who knit in our church group.

Wonder if the depth of color----- more/less dye to be absorbed--- has anything to do with weight.

I always feel black is heavier than white. Glad I now know it is.

I always thought this, too, and thought it was due to my inexperience knitting or crocheting. Glad to know I'm not the only one!

good idea with the scale!

Even if your tension is uniform, when you crochet you will use slightly more one one square, and slightly less on another. That is the very nature of "tying the knots" used in crochet. As long as you have the same number of stitches in each motif, you will have no trouble with assembly, and the first time you wash it in cold water, the threads will relax, expand, draw up, what ever, and everything will be even looking. I crocheted for years until carpal tunnel tried to get me. I quit crochetting and 17 years later, I still have complete use of my hands. I do miss it.

I found that the different skeins DO come out as slightly different weights even though they are supposed to be the same. It makes some of the stripes in the afghan lighter than others.

Yarn skeins

I have had the same problems. I find the solid seems to have more yardage than some of the variegated. And the dual-colored twisted yarns seem to be thinner than the wt. stated....and they seem to split. I always feel like I need to buy an extra skein..........and then I have all these building up!!

I was going to do some crocheting using some Red Heart Super Saver and didn't like to the feel of the yarn after using Red Heart "Love ". It is softer and the colors are more intense. The Super Saver is going to Goodwill.

The variegated yarn skeins are smaller than the solid color ones.

I've noticed that the yarn from recently bought skeins is much thinner than some of my decades old scrapes. Makes me wonder if the colors that are thicker maybe be older stock and the thinner colors are the new standard.

I have knitted and crocheted since I was 12. The threads and yarns are not the quality they were years ago. Prices are a lot higher too.

As someone who knits and crochets, I have noticed a difference in the thickness of Red Heart yarn.

GeriB is onto something when she mentions that different colors affect things. Anyone who paints knows that different pigments have different viscosities. And anyyone who does any kind of needlework knows that some yarns or threads are thinner than others.

So I discussed this with my husband who is a plastics process engineer. He has been in the business globally for many years and his background is diverse, although in the last 15 years, he has been involved with medical and pharmaceutical plastics. He said that there are several variables that would affect how thin the yarn is. One would be the chemical structure of the plastic being spun into yarn and the pigment would play a part in the thickness of the plastic. How much liquid was used in the mix would matter. Very importantly would be how fast the machines were running and thus how fast the plastic was being spun into yarn. The faster the machines, the thinner the thread. The thinner the liquid, the thinner the yarn. The gauge of the yarn (for example, bulky weight) would have an industry standard high or low normal that it could fall between, and that is why some yarn lots might seem to be slightly thinner than others. This could very well be on purpose to get more product out the door, or it could be because two different factories are producing the same yarn and one is following the high normal standard, while the other is following the low normal standard.

Also, since the recession hit, we have all seen companies downsizing their packaging and additionally the protocol involving quality standards of what is acceptable has changed. This is one of the many reasons I like purchasing second hand stuff.

I hand embroider a lot and I only use DMC brand floss. Some colors are a booger to stitch with. Dark blue is one color that always seems to knot up even tho I use bees wax and/or thread conditioner.

I had issues with different colors of yarn over thirty years ago - I had ordered navy blue and a lime green worsted weight (orlon or acrylic) yarn through Montgomery Wards or Sears catalog. The green was robust and springy. The navy blue was limp and lank.

The two - supposedly the same "style" - would not have worked out well together.
