I've made them in all sizes too. from 3x5" to great big ones.. and I've mostly used cracked corn, but there are a number of grains you can use.

We make barley bags out of those gray socks with the reds tips ( sock monkey socks ) Heat in micro wave for a minute and wrap around your neck or whatever. :D

That looks good, thanks for posting the link. I know someone who can use that.

We are always told to never use flannel for the bag, only for a removable cover. Flannel should never be microwaved, it has a lower flash point than cotton I think, and is more likely to burn. Thanks for the heads up on the burn danger, though! |
Yes, it can be used for hot or cold. I'm going to make more. One for the freezer. I am also going to be making some for gifts.

It seems that we all use a different material to fill them with. I fill mine with flax seed and a drop or two of a fragrance essence.
I made ten sets of two one year as gifts at christmas and they are a super big hit! Mine goes into the microwave for only 30 seconds and stays warm for about thirty minutes or so. One was shaped larger for knees and elbows as a rectangle and the other was u-shaped for around the neck. Both were made into a muslin pillow bag and then slipped into a medium weight fuzzy knit floral fabric. I can't think of the name of it, but simular to what a nigntgown is made of. (Not flannel, but a knit like that) I went to the dollar store and found coordinating jelly plastic pails to match and placed the essence, bath salts, shea butter, lotion, powder and bags in there. It made it really special to give. Kind of a aroma therapy heat pail. I still have mine. It has been used and used for many people's aches, pains and sprains. I keep it under the counter in the kitchen near the microwave to keep it handy. |
We need these now
