Seam Rippers ... Under-Appreciated
 

Hello Folks,



My name is Abreojales which is Seam Ripper in the Spanish Language. (at least that is what google says.) Grampz is busy at the sewing machine doing another project. By the way, did you know he sings while sewing? Not very well I might add.




I thought I would take moment to use his sign on here to talk to you about a very important issue. You see, I am a Seam Ripper. I am proud to be a seam ripper. We come in all shapes and sizes. Some are cheap and simple and some are expensive and elaborate. But we are here .... for you! Why is it you start cussing as you grab us? Why is it we've been lost under stacks and stacks of material? I know at least one of my cousins have been thrown across the room. The young lady that threw him bent the poor guys nose. People, People, People don't you understand that we need to work too? as we sit there we beg and plead with you to use us. We say "Hey! I need to do something here!!" Then when it is time to use us you can't find us. You know why? We sneak off. Yes that's right, we move to another area. We hope that you will show us love and respect. That is the only way we can get to you. So from now on please show us a little more respect. Make a little more work for us to do. We love you and only want to help.

I have two seam rippers, one from high school home ec, and a little one that came in one of my machines.
I value their company

So TRUE!!!! I still have and use my seam ripper from high school. She is ALWAYS close by....in the drawer of my sewing machine, along with m & m's. That's ALL that is in the drawer. I use her ALL THE TIME....maybe too much. But I'm happy she's still with me. Sewing projects come and go, but my seam ripper has NEVER left me.

Hey, me, too!! My best seam ripper is the one I bought for grade 8 home ec sewing and it's still my first go-to. My seam ripper is an old, old friend.

My wife just called onot her break. I read her this story about the seam ripper. Here is what she said to me, the man she loves....
"That is funny honey. Your seam ripper knows very well it's loved. You put it to work a lot."

But those of you who still have your ripper from highschool....REALLY?!! How in the world do you get the reverse sewing done with that?

I don't LIKE reverse sewing, so I prefer to use the sharpest tool in the box. I replace my seam ripper as soon as I can't run the blade along a seam between the layers and get a quick rip without risking tearing a hole in one layer or the other. That may be once a year or every 6 months depending on how much reverse work I've been doing!

I buy the brown handled Clover seam rippers for less than $5, usually several at a time. That is as cheap as replacing needles.

Wow, I can't even imagine how dull a 20+ year old ripper must be! Do you sharpen it somehow?

LOL...I agree with with you Jan except mine would be 40+ years. I treat my seam ripper with great respect as she helps me out of all kinds of small missteps.
