sewing fleece blanket, question
 

I have a really cute snowman fabric that I want to cut into squares and alternate with plain, brightly colored squares. I want it to be 2 layers thick. I'm thinking of cutting the squares then sewing a 1/2" seam through 4 layers of fabric, stopping 1/2" before the end of the fabric (does that make sense?). I DO NOT want to tie the edges, I want it sewn. Has anyone sewn a fleece blanket like this? Any tips?

You could make a rag quilt using fleece, the ends don't "rag", rather they "fringe" and the effect is pretty nice. Good directions for making a rag quilt are here - http://greenappleorchard.blogspot.co...-tutorial.html Fleece does tend to be heavy when you are sewing together 2 pieces front and back, so leave out the middle piece you would generally put between the individual blocks when using flannel or cotton. I've made lots of rag quilts using fleece, with just one layer of fleece and with 2 layers.

You can also just do a block quilt. Cut your snowman squares, sew them together with your bright squares, then put the backing on and stitch in the ditch to join the two sides. Or quilt it. If you want to do binding, I recommend cutting a larger backer and bringing the edges over as binding, it's a little easier to work with. Is the fabric fleece, or is it cotton?

I was thinking that would save me time in the long run. If I sew the seam through 4 pieces, then open it up so that it is 2 squares, each having 2 layers. Then I won't have to stitch in the ditch to add the back (or any of the other techniques to add the back).

Duh. Just realized "fleece" was in your title. ;)
