Sewing PJ bottoms

I thought every one made pj bottoms the way I was taught. I made a pair at quilt open sew day and no one there had ever seen it done my way. I cut two leg pieces, usually by tracing around a pair of made bottoms, on the fabric, sew the pants hem, sew the leg part closed, put one leg inside the other and then sew the crotch, put elastic in the waist band or drawstring. Done. Anyone do it this way? Is there a better way?

pamesue 10-26-2012 10:28 AM

I have heard of this method, but never tried.

Tartan 10-26-2012 11:02 AM

I love doing simple pants that way. Now pants with zipper and fly, forget about it.

HillCountryGal 10-26-2012 11:03 AM

Knew this was one way to make pj bottoms, just haven't done it like that.
One thing for sure, by stitching the crotch seam like that, you'll have less chance of the seam popping out!

Isn't it fun to share sewing knowledge with each other?! So many good ideas out there.

BellaBoo 10-26-2012 11:08 AM

I use fleece for the pants. Everyone loves them. My girls live in them at home.

Stitchnripper 10-26-2012 12:45 PM

I made fleece pants like that one time. Now I sew the fronts together, backs together, then the side seams and leg seams. Hems and elastic.

Neesie 10-26-2012 01:09 PM

I've done them like that (except hemming after legs are sewn) but don't care for the crotch seam, that way. I prefer it to lie down flat, by sewing the crotch first, then across both legs (then press the seam open and then down).

I make lots of pajama pants for children and grandchildren and that is the way I do it also. Quick and easy

I am not quite understanding that, is it w/wrong sides together?

sew_itnow 10-27-2012 07:17 AM

Have made many pairs that way. Have tried several other ways also but always go back to that one much easier I think

suzm 10-27-2012 08:28 AM

It's the way I was taught to make pants.

caspharm 10-27-2012 08:54 AM

I did find a tute online that shows that method (http://www.instructables.com/id/How-...ants/?ALLSTEPS)

char593 10-27-2012 09:01 AM

Always do it this way.

Shelbie 10-27-2012 09:54 AM

This is the way that I do it too. I think I first learned it in a 4-H club.

piepatch 10-27-2012 10:02 AM

It has been a long time since I have made pants of any kind, but I have done it both ways. I want to make pajamas for Christmas gifts, so will probably sew them your way. If I remember right, I think I preferred that way when I tried it. Some of my pajamas will be for men, and my pattern does not show a fly. I would rather not go to the trouble of making a fly, but would that be acceptable? I have two patterns, and neither show a fly. Why would a pattern company even make one that way?

MimiBug123 10-27-2012 10:47 AM

I've never heard of that way. Can you do a tute for us?

I have some men's sweat pants and none of them has a fly, either. I wouldn't worry about it. If the guy needs to go, he'll figure it out.

I make all my pants that way, even if they have a fly. Sweat pants, PJ's or good styled pants, they all turn out great. In fact putting a zip in a fly is easy to do before the pants are assembled.

I make mine the exact same way! I used to sew the crotch differently but once I learned about putting one leg inside the other, I've never done it any other way. I don't buy a pattern either. If I am making them for someone, I just ask to borrow their favorite pair and use that for the pattern.

All the boys shorts that I make in my Knox charity group are done this way.So so easy. Made a pair a few weeks ago
from a striped pillowcase and even matched lines. You described it well. This can be considered the commercial
way things are sewn.

quilter68 10-28-2012 04:41 AM

I didn't know this method. Thanks I will try this soon.

Lyncat 10-28-2012 06:53 AM

That's the way I make shorts for kids!

twogeebs 10-28-2012 07:15 AM

Always wanted to try to make my own PJ bottoms. What is the round about yardage of material for an adult?

mumzer 10-28-2012 08:10 AM

lillybeck 11-03-2012 06:13 AM

For some reason I cannot wrap my imagination around this.

Susanna10 11-03-2012 09:08 AM

Thank you. Will try that

Patti25314 11-03-2012 01:26 PM

I have some fabric that was suppose to be for scarves this year, but might become PJ bottoms! Thanks.

bearisgray 11-03-2012 06:36 PM

I think pants are more comfortable when the crotch seam is sewn that way.
