Sewing for yourself?
 

I decided to make a spring jacket that I could wear to church. By the time I figured the cost of the fabric, pattern, thread, and interfacing it would have been $35. I could buy something on sale for that. Do you find it economical to sew or do it because you enjoy making clothes?

It used to be cheaper to make clothes but not so much anymore. Especially if you pay full price for patterns & fabric. I sew clothes when I can't find what I'm looking for & try to plan around pattern & fabric sales. To answer your question I sew clothes because I enjoy it because usually the savings is not so great.

i sew for myself because the clothes will fit better, i can choose my own colors, and no one else will have one like it :)

I started sewing to make my own clothes and quickly found that I could not really visualise what would suit me -- fabric and style and so often I was disappointed in the result. Now I have put on weight it is difficult to find some things that fit (eg nice loose pure cotton summer dresses just to wear around the house when it is very hot), but in general I am happy to buy clothes on sale -- even when I try on 30 items to find one worth buying!
I realise that when I started sewing I really was in love with fabric and wanted to be creative -- and patchwork is, for me, much more satisfying that any clothes sewing would be.

I made cloths for 40 years because it was more economical and I had children with fit problems. Both my boys were very tall and skinny at all ages, one daughter is very tall, the other is very busty. I was very busty and it was hard to find things that fit right. Right now the styles and prints do not appeal to me. I'm thinking I will be making more of my cloths again. I saved the patterns that looked good on me and many have the adjustments I need for fit. I always chose classic styles that are almost always "in". I don't like big, bold prints because I always feel the cloths are wearing me instead of me wearing the cloths.

I do not sew clothes. Much cheaper, better selection, better fit by just going shopping!

I bought the fabric and pattern but haven't made the clothing yet. What I like to wear for good is always at the high end stores and almost never, ever on sale in my size. I love wearing silk, and summer light weight worsted wool for my jackets.

When I got my very first sewing machine over 35 yrs. ago I did sew a few clothing items for myself and then later for my first child. Then I realized it was much easier to just go shopping and get a good fit and not have to wonder how it will look on me when I'm done making it.

I have sews clothes since I was little. It was much cheaper and you could get what you wanted. The price of patterns and fabric went up. Discount stores come in and you couldn't beat the prices there. Than I came into quilting. Patterns and fabric are still costly but what a joy it is to spend my money there. I am not a fashion diva so missing out on all the latest fashions does not bother me in the least bit.

I sew all my clothes.[no bras] I started sewing when I was young and also sew for others. I wouldn't think of giving up my sewing. I love it!

I use to sew clothes for myself and two Daughters. Now I just make quilt and hem curtains for our windows.

I think you sew clothes to get exactly what you want. The only time I really see a major cost savings in in formals. You can always do a formal gown cheaper than you can buy a new one.

If its one you will use over and over and it comes with pieces for an entire outfit its worth the money -but only if JoAnn or Hancock has them on sale.I will also tear something apart that fits but has seen better days and make it into my pattern. Keep your eyes open in 2nd hand stores for patterns and notions. Before pitching old cloths remove zippers and buttons. I recycle as much as I can. Heck I'm still using patterns that are 40yrs old that all I've had to do is lengthen the pants, I've always worn my skirts at or below my knees.

I don't sew clothes. I used to, but everything at the store (compared to the cost of fabric) is much cheaper. I will still make some costumes, however. Depending on the quality/price of a bought one on-line. For cosplay/sci-fi conventions you really need a fabulous outfit. :) My daughter has been making Assassin's Creed Connor's outfit for several weeks. The con is the 6th. Now, this has cost her a few hundred to make but it's unbelievable. And she's only 16 and never had a sewing class! I just taught her a few basic things and she picked it up from there.

Did for years but not much anymore -- discount stores are cheaper. I will still sew special-occasion things and when I want a pair of pants that actually fit ..... I do still sew a fair bit for the home -- draperies, cushion covers, dog beds.

I sewed everything for years and years. Loved being creative and it was cheap. But not now. I can go to a resell shop and buy excellent brands. I wear mostly knit tops and rayon slacks and I can get the top brands for about $3.00. I travel a great deal camping and I can pick up anything I want, sometimes brand new. Bought a bathrobe for $5.00 that had the tags still on it, would have cost about $50 at Macy's and it was absolutely beautiful. Now I use all my creative energy for quilting.

For quite a few years, I made my own clothes -- :( Then I got unhappy with fit, quality of fabric, general look of clothes, price -- and I discovered sales at Macys and Dillards -- and now that I have retired, I wear mainly jeans and tshirts!! -- my sewing is quilt making!! :)

I like being creative in what ever I am doing. Clothes. Quilts. Scapebooking. I just discovered kaleidoscope quilts. What fun is that. Every turn of the fabric gives you another look. Try something new to you. Do not stop learning. I am just saying!

I enjoy sewing for myself since I only wear dresses and do not use dry cleaning. My dresses as a rule have pockets and no zipper just pull on over my head. So I have dresses that fit have been washed hundreds of times and still look nice I actually wear the fabric out and the cost is kept down since I use fabric found at thrift stores and yard sales.

I used to sew almost all of my clothes even took a lingerie class & made my own underwear. Also did wedding & prom gowns. Don't sew very much anymore. Truthfully about all I ever wear anymore, unless I go somewhere is sweats in the winter & long loose "muu-muus" in the summer. I have a lot of suits & nice dresses, but have lost so much weight I really need to make or buy something that really fits for good. I like to use natural fabrics for clothing - just don't like the feel of synthetics on my skin. It is impossible to get good quality fashion fabric in my area anymore.

I think it's a love of sewing and getting a good fit. I'm learning to sew clothes because I hate the way everything fits at the store. My Mom used to sew all my clothes - I'm 39 now - 40 in November. We would go pick out a pattern and fabric together. I would describe how I wanted it to fit. Now she says my problem is I had a custom sewer the first half of my life and haven't gotten over it. (lol)

I was thinking of revamping my garden, but you know we found it would cost $1K to put it the way we wanted. Well... the husband asked me how much have you been spending at the farmers market every week. I said about $15 - $20. He said it was more cost effective to support people who liked to garden then for us to get out there.

So now I look at sewing as a hobby and if I like it and I like what I'm making, then I'm good. Really I just like playing with power tools.

I watched my mom sew for many years...she was a self-taught seamstress and made quite a few things for me and later for my sisters...and patched jeans for my 4 brothers! I learned to sew by taking Singer Sewing Course years ago and sewed quite a bit for myself before I was married, sewed a suit for DH after we wed, and created many cute dresses for our first 3 kids...as they got older, their tastes changed, but when it came to prom dresses, oh,did I have fun! I even made dresses for friends of my girls. No, I probably didn't charge what I could have, but these youngsters were also working girls...and my biggest reward was seeing the smiles on their faces and how beautiful they looked. I do some sewing for my DGD, but at 6 years, she's kinda picky...and full of attitude! Oh, well, I can still enjoy making christening gowns and baby blankets! :)
