Shopping for Granddaughter
 

Lil Anne will start kindergarten in the Fall. She loves wearing her dresses. Yesterday I was in well-known department store and looking at the cute dresses. Looking at one--thought what is this texture--YES, it was made from polyester double knit--I was totally taken back so much that I did not check the manufacturing name or the cost. Is polyester double knit being used by clothing manufacturing now? If I get back to store any time soon, I will check for all the details. As I said, I was shocked !

yikes, can't imagine that it is coming back. i still have a couple of pieces of it in my sewing stash from when the DDs were little.

Its been back, its the 100% polyester that is hard to work with, the mixed blend is better

Romanojg, not that stuff --it is that double knit polyester from the 70s--ugh ! Just this year, I donated all my leftovers of that material !

On the plus side, the dress will never wear out.

icky, it made me sweat and held stains. didn't like it at all. I'm a 100% cotton person.

I don't much want to relive any fashions from the 70's but double knit has got to be the worst. I agree about the sweating and making you uncomfortable. It did that to me, too.

Cheap fabric to use but the cost of the clothes made from it will cost more then cotton. How much was it back in the 70's? 3 yards for a $1?

The double knit polyesters I used in the 70s were NOT cheap/inexpensive.

I had two awesome pantsuits made of the stuff - a purple one and a melon/tangerine one. I looked GOOD! then.

I am with you on this! Hot, sticky and itchy! I can't imagine kids even WANTING to wear this.

I suppose if it is in fashion they will wear it. Fashion seems to replace sense.

OMG, the 70s are actually coming back. I have to say, they were easily washed with little pressing.

Yes, it is double knit polyester. It's been in one shop where I buy clothes for over two years. Not what I want, but neither is spandex! :-)

In the 70's I had work uniforms made with double knit polyester, and they never ever wore out. They looked brand new until the very end. The. very. end.

My husband has a patchwork quilt that his grandmother made for him when he was in high school. He graduated in 1974!!!!! The front is still as good as it was when I met him, the backing, a sheet, not so good.
If he can still love that old thing, he can surely love this old thing (me)

I have a few pieces of double knit that I have been using to make covers for the dogs' beds. Now I can stop wondering what I'm going to do when it's gone - get more

I have not seen any of it lately, but do remember how it stitched up so well. The Stretch & Sew patterns were all the rage. I have seen a few quilts made from the scraps, and they were vibrant colors, holding up well washing after washing.

all kinds of odd fabrics are coming out now. knits are back maybe. Hillary wore a knit outfit in the news yesterday. She doesn't need to wear knit though! wish i were there to advise her, but then I'm not fond of her so that would be difficult to do. knits come out of the dryer just perfect!
