I found this yesterday while roaming Walmart. $60 seemed like a good price for it, so on impulse I bought it along with the attachment for single-folding 2.5" strips for binding (another $7).
I'm having second thoughts, though. For one thing, I just realized that some quilters advise not ironing binding strips before sewing them to the quilt. This is to allow the edge to roll more naturally. I have always ironed my binding strips in half, and it seems as if this machine would be great for that, but maybe I should be skipping this step entirely! I don't often make bias strips for applique and, when I do, they're pretty easy to make with my Clover bias tips. I'm getting ready to bind a quilt, so I really need to decide whether to use this machine or not. I'm thinking maybe I should try the no-iron binding strip method first. It would certainly help our household budget if I take the machine back! Anyone have any advice? |
I have one and I like it. I don't use it every time.
I do use it if I have a lot of binding. I always press mine and I have never had an issue. Sometimes it hangs up over a seam, but if you gently guide it through it works fine. |
I always iron my binding, and really like my bias tape maker. It's amazing how it really makes an accurate fold. I run all my pieces thru first then join them as it sometimes balks on seams.

I iron my binding in half too.

Sounds like you've already decided. Got to watch those impulse buys - usually it's something else that's bothering you that causes you to buy and not because you actually want that thing.
I don't iron my binding, if it matters, so I guess that's your call too! |
I never iron my binding.

I iron my binding with the help of two fingers to fold it for me. Would your grandmother have used that new gadget?
|
Personally I would take it back, one because I'm too tight to spend that much money for making something that isn't that hard to do, but it's YOUR decision.

I only iron a 1/4" seam on one side of my binding and I'm reconsidering doing that!
