Sisters Quilt Show rained out!!!

So sad!!! We left at 12:30 --- weather was hot and muggy. At 3:30 a friend sent me this picture she took in front of the Stitchin Post!!! A thunderstorm hit and dropped BUCKETS.

AuntieD 07-14-2012 03:12 PM

What a disappointment.

sweetana3 07-14-2012 03:27 PM

Please please send us the leftover rain. All our plants and trees are dying in central Indiana.

amandasgramma 07-14-2012 03:42 PM

sweetana3 -- we're kinda dry here. But I'd love to send you some!!! I love/hate thunderstorms....though we got the rain we needed, I'm worried we'll end up with fires started by the lightening.

Crqltr 07-14-2012 04:02 PM

Could have cooperated a little more and rained after the show! Hope you got to see some of it.

amandasgramma 07-14-2012 04:06 PM

I did!!! I have pics but am too darned tired to get the camera and download them!!!! Got up at 4:30 this AM to get there early!! YAWN!!!!

susiequilt 07-14-2012 05:48 PM

I hope they had all the quilts protected or have a laundromat nearby!
What a shame for all the stores that have lost revenue.

patchsamkim 07-14-2012 06:21 PM

I think I read that this is the first year in 37 years that the show got rained out. Hope they got the quilts down before they got soaked. Sure could use some of that rain here in Wisconsin!

amandasgramma 07-14-2012 06:27 PM

I just got more info from friend that was there..... I asked her if she got wet. Here's her answer:

" Pant legs mostly. A little damp when if first started raining, then it quit, started again and got worse from there. At one point we were walking up a side street back to the main drag and a bolt of lightning came down that was not
Pant legs mostly. A little damp when if first started raining, then it quit, started again and got worse from there. At one point we were walking up a side street back to the main drag and a bolt of lightning came down that was not more than a block from us and it was in an open area. I saw the streak from sky to ground. My ankle and feet hurt but let me tell you, did I move after that. Went to the stichen post hoping to get a bag but they were out. Oh well no sovenier"

Another post from her said the fire dept. got in immediatly and started taking down the quilts that were on the high building. Volunteers jumped in and immediately started taking down quilts. Another friend e-mailed me that she was having a hard time leaving Sisters to get to Bend --- traffic jams!!

beatys9 07-14-2012 06:44 PM

Oh my! We got this storm yesterday in the Seattle area. Someone's house was hit by lightning & he was thrown 15' across the room but is ok. He got out as the house burned down. These lightning storms are nothing to mess with - hope everyone in Sisters, quilts included are safe. Even with all our rain, lightning fires is still an issue here, especially on the East side of the Cascade Mountain range.

Latrinka 07-15-2012 01:45 PM

Awe, what a bummer!

Debbie54 07-15-2012 02:00 PM

Wow!, I haven't made to the sisters show yet, but looks like it was a good idea not to try this year. Our weather has been muggy and it was damp this morning, but no storms. The Siskiyou's get a few wildfires this time of year from lighting but so far we have been lucky.

Grandma Peg 07-15-2012 02:08 PM

So sad that they got rained out. Hope everyone and all the quilts were ok. It is on my bucket list to see this show some year!!!

kathdavis 07-15-2012 02:13 PM

Wish we could have that rain come our way. Here in Missouri, it is so dry, we are having to water our trees so we don't loose them. The grass went dormant weeks ago. I'm worried about water shortages and our food prices. These temperatures of 100+ and no rain, is not a good combination.

nygal 07-15-2012 02:50 PM

Wow..that does look like a down pour. We just had a thunderstorm and heavy rain go thru my area but we really needed and wanted it. Everyone's grass has been so yellow due to lack of rain his Summer.

alfosa421 07-15-2012 05:25 PM

Cna't say I'm sad when people are desperate for rain-the quilts will still be available-one of our guilds show sites was flooded out last year and changed venues virtually overnight-keep the faith the show will go on but go puddle jumping in the meantime and cherish what a lot of us are so desperately seeking (Best intentions)

maryfrang 07-16-2012 03:23 AM

If mother nature would just send some rain to all of Missouri. It is so dry and it has been at least a month since I have seen that stuff called rain. And it had to rain where they did not want it, how sad. Great pics and looks that it started to be a great show.

JudyG 07-16-2012 07:20 AM

Luckily, my group of 6 were there early and on the way back to where we were staying in Redmond before the weather hit. We went to Material Girls in Redmond and ran into a group of ladies who had come from Vancouver Island in Canada and had been told by someone to not go in the morning, but to wait until afternoon. I feel so bad for them because I'm sure they didn't get there in time to see hardly any of the quilts before the storm hit.

We'll take it here in west central Indiana, too. it's been months since it rained here. Everything is either dead or dying.

That's a dang shame!!!!! I hesitate to tell anyone to come in the morning -- will make it too crowded in the AM, BUT I would NEVER purposfully tell someone to go in the afternoon!!! Traffic to get in is horrible, it's hotter, and this rain is always a possibility!!! Shame on whoever told them that!

We got the storms after they hit Seattle. I can't believe how much thunder/lightening we had this weekend. I don't remember that much in my 65 years living in WA state--both sides of the mountains. Luckily, we weren't hit by any lightening but our Dish Network sattellite went out a couple times during the 2-day storm. I wish we could send our cool, wet summer weather east to any state that needs it! This a day here and a day there of summer weather is getting old with us!

amandasgramma 07-16-2012 11:26 AM

To everyone who is in a drought ---- I'm sorry -- I didn't mean to sound like we don't appreciate the rain. This topic has gone from pictures of the quilt show to talking about your drought!!!! We, too, need the rain --- however, it WOULD have been nice if Mother Nature had waited about 4 more hours!!!!

quilt3311 07-16-2012 01:14 PM

One of my friends was lucky enough to go to the show this year. She said it dumped buckets of water while there. Said it was like a good "gully washer" here in middle America. "gully washer" means it rains hard and long and all the small creeks produce flash floods. Was just so sorry that her trip, to the show, was washed out. She said some of the quilts really were soaked.

amandasgramma 07-16-2012 01:31 PM

I'm sorry that happened to your friend, too !!! :( I couldn't understand how they were able to get all the quilts up and protected so fast! They told my friend that all the quilts got in and weren't wet!!! HMMMMMMMMMM

caspharm 07-16-2012 05:55 PM

What a bummer! We were getting rain every night over the weekend in LV. The one last night stopped right above our house. It was hailing and was washing out our yard. The street was like a river with hail on it. The hail was large marble size and we had a small pile still in our backyard until about the middle of the afternoon (it's a shady spot).

Just Me... 07-16-2012 06:06 PM

It would have been sad for all that travelled so far. I saw some pics before the rain and it was an incredible display of quilting talents!

w7sue 07-16-2012 09:32 PM

It was beautiful until about 2pm - my girlfriend and I were already on our way to Bend when it hit - the news I heard was that all the quilts were down and safe with the help of many volunteers. The biggest down side to it was the fact that the stores lost out on revenue ... no quilts were lost or damaged.

I, too, was at the show. We arrived at 8:30 am, so we got almost the entire day to see the beautiful quilts before the skies opened up. When the first sprinkles started about 3:00, it was incredible to watch the volunteers jump into action. Here are some of the pictures I took....

Divokittysmom 07-17-2012 11:34 AM

That's exactly what it looked like when the rains came!! Great pics of the 'event' that spoiled the Event!
Yes, as someone mentioned, the biggest negative of this deluge of a storm was the loss of revenue for the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show. 3 hours of lost revenue is weighing heavy on them right now. They are encouraging people to become sponsors of the show to help out some of the revenue loss. As I understand it this is the first time in the 37 yr history that it has rained.
It was a fabulous show despite the rains!!

Are you serious???? They had more people than in YEARS and people were buying --- and they say 3 hours is "weighing heavy"???????? Call me skeptical!

calmarek 07-17-2012 04:28 PM

I agree. I came up on a bus from California with 46 quilters and we stopped at 6 Oregon quilt shops on our way to the quilt show. When we returned to the bus after each of those 6 shops, we passed the clipboard and each wrote down how much we spent there. When we totaled it all up -- 6 quilt shops plus the Sisters Quilt Show -- we spent $17,044.00! With the economy the way it is, I'm sure they did just fine!

Divokittysmom 07-18-2012 09:18 AM

Dee; Just repeating what was posted by the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show.

amandasgramma 07-18-2012 10:07 AM

Where was that posted.....I'm interested. Considering Sisters has the highest land/home prices in the county, and have events all summer long, I fail to see why 2 hours of non-sales would hurt them so badly! Sorry -- still skeptical!!! I'm not trying to start a fight -- just dadgum curious! :)

Dee; The posting was on Facebook under, Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show.

amandasgramma 07-18-2012 03:10 PM

Thanks.....

Okay -- After reading this I can see where they say they didn't make all the $$ they wanted/needed. But the town itself is not hurting... :) THAT's what I thought of with your comment.

Now I need to go back and figure out where we can become "friends"... :)

CraftyCricket 07-19-2012 05:34 PM

Can you send a few of those BUCKETS over to Wisconsin. We had a little rain today, but we could use some more.
