My daughter wanted me to ask all of you. :D

She wants to wear more skirts this year at college, but hates slips. She'd wear leggings or tights with them. Any solutions?

MamaBear61 08-09-2010 01:15 PM

Rub your tights with a bounce dryer sheet before leaving the house and throw one in you purse for a reapply if static builds up during the day.

amma 08-09-2010 01:25 PM

We used liquid fabric softener which seemed to work better than the sheets :D:D:D

2wheelwoman 08-09-2010 01:37 PM

use some hand lotion and then rub the excess on the tights or leggings. works great for me.

sewcrafty 08-09-2010 01:39 PM

Carry a small can of static guard, it also works on fly away hair.

CarrieAnne 08-09-2010 01:43 PM

I use a bit of hair conditioner dabbed into my hands. That also works on staticy hair!

Tink's Mom 08-09-2010 01:47 PM

I use to keep a can of static guard in my drawer at work...you could even spray it discreetly at the desk :-D  :-D

lab fairy 08-09-2010 01:53 PM

I just don't wear the darn things. :-) I think there used to be an anti-static cling spray stuff at one time? Is it still on the market?

cjomomma 08-09-2010 02:00 PM

Tell her to put tennis balls in the dryer. I know that sounds strange but it really does take the static out of clothing. I have a flannel jacket that always had a bad static problem but sense i have been using tennis balls I don't have that problem any more.

stitchinwitch 08-09-2010 02:23 PM

Before I wore pants, I would live in dresses and skirts and always had a can of hair spray - it did the trick!

They really are great aren't they! I've been using them for years as I don't like to use fabric sheets and softener is just a PIA. (they do smell good tho!)

mollymct 08-09-2010 02:50 PM

I have Static Guard near me at all times! My hair gets static-y easily and I can't stand it. I spray it on my brush. So, at home, in my bag, in the desk drawer at work. It works!

barnbum 08-09-2010 02:58 PM

You gals are full of great ideas!! Thanks! Rachel is reading them as they come through.

When she asked me--I remembered Static Guard, but I knew exactly where to go to get more ideas. :-D

Mamabear--I had a suitemate in college who once applied Downy liquid fabric softener) to her hair...as the result of misunderstanding that the fabric softener recommended was intended to be in the form of a dryer sheet! I can't remember what event we attended, but she didn't have time to wash her hair, so it was very flat but smelled nice!

TOO FUNNY

I have heard, but not tried this, pin a safety pin to an inside seam. It is suppose to take the static right out of your outfit!

amandasgramma 08-09-2010 05:58 PM

Baby powder....sprinkle on the INSIDE of the skirt.

annette1952 08-09-2010 06:38 PM

We always used static guard

jolo 08-11-2010 05:37 AM

the tennis balls and hair spray really do work for me

Dortha 08-11-2010 06:26 AM

A safety pin in the hem of a garment will control static in the fabric.

Dodee 08-11-2010 09:04 AM

Sometimes if you put a safety pin in the seam, it eliminates static.

chamby 08-11-2010 09:20 AM

I have found that if I put hand lotion on my legs this cut down on the static in clothing.

use dryer sheets.

Dodee 08-11-2010 01:43 PM

I read somewhere that drying sheets (used ones) are good for use as a stabilizer when embroidering. Has anyone tried this.

Sassy913 08-11-2010 03:04 PM

buy a large spray bottle (2 C minimum) and put 1 inch of fabric softener in it and dilute with warm water till full. Shake well. Every time she wears the skirts, lightly spray them before dressing with the diluted solution and the garment should stay cling free for hours unless the day is very dry. You can also put a small bottle like the ones you get at the dime store (about 3 oz size spray bottles) in your purse or backpack with the solutions as well to use throughout the day if needed. Works like a dream in the dryer when fluffing up clothes as well. I hate ironing so often toss things in with a couple of squirts of the solution and tumble for 10 min and they're ready to wear.

Quiltmaniac 08-11-2010 03:21 PM

Please consider wearing a slip! I sat behind a woman in church last week, every time we got up to sing she had to (not very) discreetly dig a out "wedgie" - and she was a very slim person, too. I've seen it worse in larger people.

Later in the parking lot it was breezy and several women might as well have not been wearing a skirt at all since we could all see every part of their anatomy from waist to ankle where the fabric blew through their legs.

Yuck. Even though you still have to deal with static cling, it's slips for me with each and every dress! Makes them hang so much better.

trupeach1 08-11-2010 03:25 PM

hair spray, spray on her leggings and the inside of her skirt.

IBQUILTIN 08-11-2010 04:29 PM

Pin a small stainless safety pin in the seam allowance near your hem. Problem solved

BettyM 08-11-2010 05:31 PM

I read somewhere to pin a safety pin to a seam on your skirt, and it would take care of static.

Sorry, just saw the last post!

ceegee 08-12-2010 07:34 AM

Buy a static free slip. Most of the better lingere shops carry them

Aurora 08-12-2010 08:19 AM

We use to use a metal coat hanger to rub the underside of our skirts. But try to find a metal coat hanger these days.

Dee 08-12-2010 06:06 PM

Buy static guard. That does it.

zz-pd 08-13-2010 02:32 PM

Thank you for the ideals. God bless.

littlehud 08-14-2010 11:09 AM

Static Guard. It works great.
