Snowing in Alabama

Here in my sewing room watching snow fall in central Alabama, so unusual for us. It is so pretty and nice for a day. Getting lots of piecing done and watching movies.

The weather has sure been crazy this winter. I'd trade our frigid temperatures for a bit more snow up here, but we're used to snow.

Jingle 01-28-2014 02:05 PM

We just got the real cold this time. Enjoy your sewing time.

Tartan 01-28-2014 02:21 PM

Pretty for now but I hope you don't get the freezing rain.

Tink's Mom 01-28-2014 02:46 PM

I would be happy to send you some more snow...or the frigid temps that go along with it...
We are having a heat wave right now. It is up to 4F...the wind chill today is -20F to -40F below zero.
I've had enough of this winter....

Just stay in and be safe....I know the southern states don't have anything more than sand to use on the roads.

We are having sleet and snow and ice here. Sure wish I had the day to play in my room. The dogs come first and today is the first day all 3 dogs are together. Had to make sure they behaved, which they have.

bjrusty 01-28-2014 03:41 PM

suppose to snow in the panhandle of Fl, can you beleive it. Barb

Nammie to 7 01-28-2014 03:43 PM

We are actually having a heat wave right now -- temps are up to mid 20s. We may get a bit of snow tomorrow but we are used to the colder weather and snow on the ground. It would be a treat if it didn't happen very often.

A few days ago DH suggested we just get in the car and drive south until we find warm weather. Well I guess there's no sense in that if it's snowing in Alabama and Florida! Gonna be -1°F in Michigan tonight. Been the snowiest January on record here. Only 50 more days until Spring. Oh, I wish I hadn't said that.

Sandra in Minnesota 01-28-2014 04:03 PM

It seems there has been crazy weather all over the country.

jhoward 01-28-2014 04:08 PM

Last year it snowed in MN until mid May....now we have cold....It was up to -1 today...tomorrow it will (or predicted) to be in the 20's...we are getting tired of cold. Those of you in the south experiencing MN weather...stay inside, off the roads......it can be dangerous for those not accustomed to it......Be safe....enjoy your time inside...

I live in N. Alabama between Huntsville and Birmingham. I started out yesterday morning to go pick up granddaughter and take her to the bus in a town about 45 minutes away. It had just started with a light snow flurry. Weather said light dusting with most accumulation of 1/2". As I went down the highway, the snow started coming heavier. I was about 7 miles from my home when I called my dh. I had taken the side road cut off we always took and going slowly, I lightly tested my brakes. I slid a little and then realized I could not do this. When I called, I realized I had forgotten to charge my phone and it was beeping. I turned around and slowly travelled back to my home. We ended up with 1" of snow and ice and I prayed all the way home. 3 years ago next month I hit a small patch of black ice and went off the road and turned the car over and slid about 150 ft into the woods. Don't ever want to experience that again especially in a Geo Metro. I'm staying home.

misspriss 01-29-2014 05:12 AM

Mark todays date on corresponding August date and remember you wished for this warm weather!
I talked to a friend in North Dakota and it was -20 last evening. It is 17 here in Oak Point TX, but it will warm up a bit. At least the wind is not blowing hard.

ptquilts 01-29-2014 05:47 AM

woke up to snow on the ground in Alabama Gulf Coast. Ice all over the palm trees, pretty!

Rntraveler 01-29-2014 05:58 AM

I live in Huntsville, Al and we have had as much as 10" of snow... this was back in the 80's.This am it was 9 out there and it was a frozen tundra but thanks all we got is a dusting....

MaryKatherine 01-29-2014 06:37 AM

Even in Canada we can and do appreciate the absolute beauty in a fresh snow fall. I'm fortunate to be retired and have a snug house, so we don't go out if we don't want to. Winter forces more use of the gym to stay walking fit, and we make much less use of the car and become more efficient in our grocery shopping.
I definitely feel for those in the south with inadequate insulation. We may be used to this weather up here, but the loss of sunlight is the hardest thing. And I AM getting a touch of cabin fever.

I am from Decatur Alabama but I now live in Fort Lauderdale fl. I love Alabama but I sure don't miss it now.My Aunt said all of her water pipes broke and her garage door froze and she couldn't get her car out.She said there is a lot of ice on the bridges.I hope you enjoy your time staying home and staying safe and warm.

Abby'smom 01-29-2014 08:19 AM

 me too -- I have enjoyed staying in and working on my embroidery/applique projects (each of our bee members is making blocks for signature quilts for us) since we have power and no reason to get out -- around the Houston area a lot of folks can't even drive safely when it rains, so when the temps drop below freezing and ice forms, schools are closed and and people are asked to stay home -- it's above freezing but there is snowy-looking ice here and there -- this weekend we are supposed to have high temps in the low 70s -- crazy weather!!

Bamagal 01-29-2014 09:08 AM

I'm in Birmingham! Was looking forward to a day or two when I could stay in and sew. However, I'm in, but feel to bad to sew so I'm just trying to stay warm and keeping up on the news!! Glad I'm home! My son was stranded for a while yesterday but got safely home after walking 4 1/2 miles. His car is still stranded but he's safe! Still way to many stranded by the snowy streets!

mjhaess 01-29-2014 09:57 AM

Cold and icy and snowy here in Charleston SC also...

purplefiend 01-29-2014 01:56 PM

Yesterday morning it was 24 at 8am,the roads were icy from the rain earlier and it was also sleeting. The high temperature was 34 by 3pm. I stayed home all day, was supposed to go to the soldier quilts sewing day.
Since I don't know how to drive on ice and my car wouldn't behave anyhow.... I baked 2 loaves of delicious bread, made a pot of Tex-Mex chicken soup. Here's the link to my soup recipe: http://www.quiltingboard.com/recipes...p-t239852.html
While the bread dough was rising, baking and the soup was cooking; I sewed more quilt blocks.

Oh my - I'm so glad to hear that it has WARMED up to 4F! I can't even imagine what it's like. I spent many winters in Connecticut, but it never got below zero. I though 9 or 10F was pretty darned cold. On the other end of the scale - I leave Tucson when the temp moves into the 90s. I'm a real wimp about both high and low temps.

Momo 01-29-2014 03:08 PM

I live just South of Phenix City, AL. and we had a couple of inches of snow here. Ice, then snow on top, lots of people didn't have to go in for work today mainly because of the ice. Temps here never made it past 29, and now it's going down again.

madamekelly 01-29-2014 03:29 PM

I have been watching the crazy weather down south this winter, and even crazier back east, and I have one question. Where is all this global warming that we have been hearing about? Here we have been alternating between cold and dry and cold and wet, today we got cold, wet, and high winds for a treat.lol!

I think the crazy weather is the result of global warming. Even if you do not believe in global warming you have to admit that the weather has turned crazy.

Atlanta was totally shut down yesterday with total gridlock. the northerners naturally laugh at this but south just not prepared for such weather--esp the ice that was and still is on the roads here.

I too am from Illinois. About 50 miles south of Chicago. I am so tired of winter and would love to send more snow your way. We are predicted to have another 6 or so inches by the weekend, so we have plenty to go around.

Raine54RN 01-30-2014 05:55 PM

I'm 50 y/o and we loved I'm Mobile when I was 3-6. I remember without pictures, a Sunday morning when it snowed! We didn't go to church and my Mom let us play on it. I remember playing on our swing . It was no more than 2 inches but I'd never seen snow! I guess that's why I remember. It made an impression!

Ladibug 01-30-2014 10:56 PM

I am in Jacksonville. It is just way too cold. I like snow but I want it melted and gone by the end on the day- haha. I am thankful that I have had power this whole time. Water was off all afternoon today but at least I was warm. The winter cold has really been hard on a lot of people this year. Got about 5" of snow the other day here. I stayed in and sewed too. Hope everyone stays safe and warm.

purtercat92 01-31-2014 06:08 PM

I live in North Carolina right outside Raleigh, I got 4 inches of snow. I woke up Wed. morning with snow on the ground and it was 4 degrees. We broke a record! I had a snow day and got one baby quilt top finished, then sandwiched and quilted 4 baby quilts. It was a productive snow day!!! And got the house cleaned and laundry done! Happy dance!!
