SPATS The "new" rage...

My sis asked me to make her a pair of spats. She gave me a couple examples by one designer that is popular now.
Has anyone else made any yet?

Here is a link I googled to see what people are wearing now. They say to use men's suiting as the fabrics.

Elegant leg warmers.

CarolLady 12-23-2012 01:33 PM

This is the first time I have heard of them. Very interesting. Good luck with getting your answer.

lfstamper 12-23-2012 01:44 PM

Spats have been around along time - must be coming back in to style...lol.

DogHouseMom 12-23-2012 01:52 PM

Those are gorgeous spats!! No ... I did not know they were coming back into vogue but it makes sense with the whole steampunk thing going on .. and spats are a fantastic idea ... 1 pair of shoes ... so many possibilities!!

BellaBoo 12-23-2012 02:00 PM

DGD bought a pair at a boutique. By the time I made her a pair in a different color she said they were every where now and she wasn't wearing them. LOL . I think they are adorable for the young girls. I used the Pellon iron on heavyweight interfacing and heavy brocade fabric I found in drapes at the Goodwill. I added the lace to use as eyes for the shoe laces. Very easy to do.

I remember in my favorite book, "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn," the main character's brother who was 10 years old desperately wanted a pair for Christmas. The time period of the story was approximately 1915.

LAQUITA 12-23-2012 02:14 PM

I have never heard of them before, but these are beautiful!

That's my favorite book too!!! I used to have either a McCall's or Butterick or someone pattern for spats. It also had directions to make spats that went "to the knees" (think go-go boots!)

You did a wonderful job! I am thinking she is maybe into the Steam Punk movement and everything Victorian is very popular. Google Steam Punk costumes and you will see some of the accessories and outfits.

MaryStoaks 12-23-2012 03:36 PM

Those are so pretty! I'd rather wear spats like those than the clunky looking thick-soled jobs I see a lot of. Great job as always!

lynnie 12-23-2012 03:51 PM

Wow, those are snazzy. Great job

RedGarnet222 12-23-2012 04:01 PM

Gee, I didn't make these girls. This was a picture of the designer's spats. I wish I did have them made already. That would be a great gift for christmas. She just mentioned them yesterday in an email to me and I thought maybe someone had made them and could direct me to where they got thier pattern.

Suze9395 12-23-2012 05:15 PM

Those are much prettier than the ones I wore in bootcamp!

I remember them from movies from the 20's & 30's. I guess what's old is new again!

MimiBug123 12-24-2012 04:33 AM

I didn't realize they were back in style. I guess things really do come around every hundred years or so!

Corksews 12-24-2012 05:29 AM

Reminds me of marching band uniforms back in the 50s.

Atomicdog 12-24-2012 05:51 AM

Oh my goodness - A Tree Grows In Brooklyn!!!!!! I was just thinking about that book 2 days ago and was going to go re-read after the holiday - what a great book! Yep - spats have been around a long time huh??!!

Caswews 12-24-2012 06:03 AM

That is a good book! But I forgot about the spats. :)

BellaBoo 12-24-2012 09:42 AM

I remember the book too. I didn't like it because I got very mad at the mother in the book and kept wondering how she could be so not caring about her DD. That was my take on it anyway. I need to re read it.

helenhiwater 12-24-2012 01:21 PM

Steampunk has put tophats and corsets back in style, so why not spats? The ones in the pictures look like fun!

Sandra in Minnesota 12-24-2012 02:21 PM

I never thought they would be back in style.

squires1042 12-25-2012 12:19 PM

These were very popular in victorian times and were a normal part of a gents wardrobe. And during the time up through the 20's they were considered stylish for gentlemen to wear.

karate lady 12-25-2012 04:48 PM

i had not seen spats for women, just men. nice idea

These were kinda in style during the hippie generation too. I remember having a green suede pair with fringe with matching handbag myself.

carolaug 12-26-2012 11:33 AM

I have never heard of them..but they do look warm.

Judith1005 12-26-2012 12:29 PM

The little black knit ones are cute.

mermaid 12-27-2012 08:00 AM

RedGarnet--that is an old pattern, isn't it? My clue was the price at the top! I recently threw away some so old they only cost 50cents. Why do we keep such? The sizing is soooo too small for today's woman.

mjhaess 12-27-2012 09:17 AM

Haven't made any but they sure are cute.....

I have seen some of these old patterns selling for a TON of money on line. I have a collection of my through the years favorites still. But, you are right you can't keep everything.... LOL!

The sizing is so different for today's woman compairitively. You are so right. I guess it was those girdles they used to wear. HUH?

hperttula123 12-29-2012 10:30 PM

I didn't know what they were called. I want some but then I would have to buy some cute shoes. :)
