star gazing telescope

Does anyone know of a good telescope to watch the stars, etc with? My grown son used to have one but didn't have all the scopes or lenses that should have come with it. I just got a catalog from Hammacher Schlemmer (new to me) and saw one in there but i'd hate to buy him one that was not better than the one he had before. something under $300.00.....
I have no idea what to look for.

I don't know much about telescopes either, but I'd suggest you google "telescope vendors" and deal with a specialty shop rather than HS, which is usually way overpriced. A knowledgeable sales technician can tell you what is the best deal for your money and what features you do and do not need.
