Starting each day sewing?
Hi fellow quilters,
I was thinking about a conversation with a friend I had recently. She starts just about every day at her sewing machine. She makes her coffee and then does some paper piecing. I am not much of a morning person but I'm wondering if I should try this out. Might make me a happier person earlier in the day. What do you think? |
OOOh, I'd never get anything else done. I have to exercise, do laundry/household things first thing or they don't get done. If I started off sewing, I'd lose track of time and everything else would get neglected!
I get dressed, eat, do some chores. Then I start sewing, sew 4-5 hours then get onto supper and more chores.
I sew early every morning before I go to my full time job. I love it!
I found that after work I was too tired and made too many mistakes. Mornings work well for me. Give it a try. |
Many, many nights I have trouble sleeping so I will get up & go into my sewing room, shut the door & sew for an hour or so. Sometimes I fold clothes too... I don't start the day sewing as there are to many chores around here that need taking care of first.
Started sewing early in the morning about a week ago. Was spending so much time doing everything else I never got around to what I really want to do. So far it seems to be working pretty well for me. Have finished a couple of old UFO's and hope to also get better organized.
You should try it and see if it works for you.
I have a little routine in the morning. I do the Washington Post crossword puzzle with my coffee. Even though I'm foggy when I wake up I enjoy the puzzle and quiet time. My husband knows I don't like to talk for awhile :) I'm too foggy to sew first thing but when I clear up it's a different story!! I try to always fit time each day to sew. It really relaxes me. |
Everyone is different, being honest with yourself- what do you think will work for you? Not sure, try a couple of different approaches: sew in your Jammies with morning coffee stopping at whatever time; get dressed, eat breakfast, sew for a while than tackle the day's "have to's" with a promise to yourself you can sew again for _____ amount of time when you're done; go in your sewing room and sew for as long as you want with a plan to do whatever "must do's" have to be completed at _____(time). You'll find the balance that works for you-and it really only has to work for you!

In all honesty, it really doesn't matter what I or anyone else thinks ...... What matter is, what YOU think! |
I get up at 3am for work. There is no way I can sew then. A quick nap when I get home and then sew a bit if I get my butt off the couch.
On the days I go to the computer first, I find myself wishing I'd headed straight for the sewing room. I get more done when I turn on the sewing machine first.
I can't see well enough to sew early in the morning so I do non critical things like unloading the dishwasher, folding laundry, etc. I like to sew in bits and pieces whenever I pass through the family room where three machines are set up - one FMQ, one piecing and one sewing sand bags for a yoga instructor. How's that for diversity?

I love to sew in the morning but I don't get much time to sew at all in the summer months with running our own businesses. Things will quiet down in about a month then I will also be able to get back to my exercise classes at the YMCA too.
I am one of those folks who need to come alive every morning. I take my meds, drink my coffee, and work the puzzle. Then I can think about doing other stuff around the house.
when i get up too early for the craft show on create, i sew a little. i feel like i got a lot done for the day
I guess it just seemed like an intriguing idea to me. When I taught school, I wouldn't have been able to squeeze sewing in before going to work. We've rearranged some furniture and I have a little sewing space here now so I think I might give it a try. Now, knitting is a different story. If I knit in the morning, it would relax me too much.
I try to get in at least 15 minutes before work of some type of crafting (quilting being my favorite). I start work at 7 so get up at 5. Most days it works but there are always those few days where chores take up all the extra time. Today I spent my extra time moving the sewing desks and totes so we could have the carpets cleaned tomorrow. I was also able to rearrange my "stuff" from my newest hobby...doodling/zentangle/water colors. So much I want to do...so little time...
Sometimes I think this would be a good way to get going. My problem is my eyes are so watery and bleary when I wake up. I'd probably end up having to rip out what I sew.
Yep, let the dog out and feed him. Make my tea and visit with you all then off to sew! No-one else in the house so my time is my own! Stay in jammies until time to walk Rico. Ahhhh...
I know for me, I do my best work in the mornings...after my coffee and reading the Quilting Board. Night time sewing just gets me in trouble most of the time...I want to hurry and get things done and find myself making too many mistakes.
I'm afraid I wouldn't get anything else done if I started my day sewing. I gotta get my work done first.
I am retired now, and don't sleep usually past 3 am, so do any ironing or pressing and other quiet things, have something to eat check out this board, then off to my sewing/quilting room, after my husband gets up, I have my shower and return with a fresh coffee and sew until we need to go and do something.....my husband does a lot of housework, and some of the cooking, so I have lots of free time to do what I want. My friends would like to rent him, however I suggest they need to train their own.....LOL
I haven't tried this yet since I'm still working on setting up a comfortable space to sew. Now I'm wondering if I want to start scheduling some of my time more. I'm entering my third year of retirement and I don't seem to be doing some of the things I'd like to be doing. Maybe I should plan out my week or two or three days at a time. I like to be flexible but it's feeling too loosey goosey at the moment. Any suggestions? While I was working, the job and family came first, of course. It's not always easy to try to put my needs first. No one is imposing that on me, it's coming from me, for some reason.
I am an early morning person but I take a long walk outside and then home to fix lunches for 3 granddaughters. Once they are off to school I like to straighten up the house and clean the kitchen then I sit down to sew a little and that makes me feel so good and in a happy mood. When the girls and their Mom get their own place to live I think I will sew early in the morning and that makes me happy for the rest of the day.
That sounds like a great routine for you. How nice that you're able to help out your daughter and grandchildren as well.
Lots2do, when my sister retired she was bonkers for awhile. She worked her whole life, only had one son, and is divorced and has no hobbies. Slowly she is getting into a different routine but it was hard for awhile. I wish I could get her interested in some of my hobbies but she's not interested! Oh well, I tried :)

I absolutely love early morning hours. I am usually up at 5, have a cup of coffee and head to the basement to piece or quilt for a couple hours before hubby gets up. Then its breakfast, a few household chores, outside chores, then back to quilting for customers until about 11 when I need to pick up grandson from pre school, fix lunch, clean up kitchen, an hours rest, back to quilting until school bus drops off granddaughter, homework with grandkids, fix supper, then relax with grandkids until they are picked up about 7
Yes, bonkers is a good description at times. I have the hobbies, I just don't always give myself permission to do them when I should. Well, gotta work on that.
