Stash Building?

I had to laugh when I received an e-mail from Connecting Therads that said Stash Building. I am trying to reduce my stash. How about you are you Stash Building or Busting?? :)

I am trying to use my stash up. Oh yeah, I just need to be about 200-300 years old.

Tartan 06-03-2015 11:54 AM

Stash busting also!

As soon as I get to my new lake house and join the guild there, I will hold a sale of so much of my fabric! It has gotten out of hand and I find myself sewing less often these days because of the mess.

Last time I did this, I sold enough fabric at $3 a yard, and books, to make about $1300!!

Wow! I have much material - but not that much!!!

ekuw 06-03-2015 01:09 PM

Add me to the "busting" group :-)

dunster 06-03-2015 02:47 PM

Like Jan, I'm in the process of moving. Everything is in storage, although I am in the new-to-me almost-empty house, waiting for some flooring to be replaced and painting to be done. I haven't seen my stash in about 6 months, but as I recall it was pretty overwhelming, and I'm not sure whether it will all fit in my new quilting room. I wouldn't dare add to it now - but I'm looking forward to becoming reacquainted with it.

Just moved - Stash busting!

Bueniebabe 06-03-2015 05:13 PM

I can't quit buying batiks from Fabric.com
They have the wildest batiks, 1500 to chose from

Me too! Fabric.com and Hancock's of Paducah are my downfalls! Probably because I get their sale emails. I guess I'm in the "stash building" category, but honestly wanting to move to "stash busting" since I have so much.

quiltsRfun 06-03-2015 05:39 PM

Busting but that email is mighty tempting.

juneayerza 06-03-2015 10:18 PM

What does busting mean? Never heard of this term! Can't figure out what it could possibly mean!

sandy l 06-04-2015 03:05 AM

Trying to use it up your material that you have before buying more. Can be extremely hard to do, especially when you get notices of good sales. Oh heck, just a notice of a sale.:)LOL

quilterpurpledog 06-04-2015 04:03 AM

I consider it a great day when I stitch up more fabric than I purchase! Since I have a stash I must lean a little ( a lot) toward purchasing. Great contest I am in!

mtkoldra 06-04-2015 04:56 AM

I am still building my stash! small house and small budget, so my stash is never going to be big

pocoellie 06-04-2015 06:23 AM

I should do some stash busting. LOL I probably need to live to be at least 400 years old, maybe even 500, especially at the rate I'm using it up and also adding to it. LOL

NoraB 06-04-2015 07:52 AM

I thought I was stash busting....but as I'm binding one quilt, it seems I'm finding "deals" I can't pass up. So, I think I'm doing the same thing with my stash as I am with my weight.........basically staying in the same place! No loss...no gain! HA!

Hi June, this is how I understand "fabric busting". To split, cut (fabric) ...then sew back together into a quilt, thereby reducing the quantity of fabric we have on hand (our Stash). Hope this makes some kind of sense to you :)

beaglelady 06-04-2015 12:16 PM

I am busting with the odd building thrown in. (If a deal is too good to pass up) Mostly I am just having a lot of fun quilting. :)

cashs_mom 06-04-2015 02:15 PM

I've never had any trouble with building my stash :D

Currently, I'm trying to use some of it up.

GrammaNan 06-04-2015 04:32 PM

Last year I had so much fabric that people had given me or I had bought at garage sales it was causing me a lot of stress. Most of the fabrics were not cotton or were old and small pieces. I bagged it all up and donated it. I felt so much better afterward. Lately I have been buying fabric per project. I haven't been able to quilt for awhile so I am buying for future projects. I am building my stash slowly with cotton and updated fabrics. Wish me luck.

QuiltnLady1 06-04-2015 06:08 PM

In spite of all the gorgeous fabric out there, I need to unpack and use some of my stash before I try building stash.

Notwendy 06-04-2015 08:21 PM

I am in my acquiring phase (which I'm told never really ends). : )

I would gladly "trade" folding money for fabric. I used the phrase folding money online somewhere and a few didn't know the term. Cash not coin!

Anybody pruning their stash within a couple of hours from Milwaukee? I'd love to help lighten your load!

However, that said, I too get paralyzed when too much is out and about. I try to only have one project out at a time but swap them in and out frequently. I am a Magpie and just can't help jumping from shiny project to shiny project. What is this "finishing" or "completing" I've read others mention? : )

jmoore 06-05-2015 02:49 AM

I wish I lived near you... I would love to shop your stash, you have great taste!

I have not accumulated much but I try to keep my purchases to the projects I'm working on.

paoberle 06-05-2015 03:01 AM

Stash busting!

JeannieT 06-05-2015 03:03 AM

I keep telling myself my stash keeps growing so I have enough when I retire and money gets tighter......I can't even part with scraps. (except really small pieces, but even those I save in a basket to offer to someone else) Now my sister and I are on the thread stash building......sigh

Skhf 06-05-2015 04:33 AM

Sales are always so tempting. I have only been quilting a year but already feel I have too much fabric and not enough time. I feel guilty that I am not sharing the beautiful fabrics I have with others and just keep them for my eyes only. Of course I should probably get off the computer now and go pin my blocks together that are stacked on the dining room table.... and I should probably go to the office too! Have fun in everything you do.

Wanabee Quiltin 06-05-2015 05:55 AM

I try hard to use my stash, but it's so hard.......

sparkys_mom 06-05-2015 07:25 AM

When I first started quilting about six years ago I made an effort to stash build since I knew I'd be retiring in a few years. Well, I have way more than I need AND my tastes have changed. So I've given a lot away and still have more than I need. Now I only purchase what I need for a project and I try to use what I have as much as possible.

Rhonda Lee 06-05-2015 12:50 PM

I'm with the busting group. And the moving group. I think moving helps to be more aware of what we really have in our stash. I just filled 3 extra large garbage bags that were either donated to the local guild or good will. It felt so liberating. I know the fabric would of never made it in any of my quilts. It didn't seem to make much difference in my stash, I've got to live much longer!

caspharm 06-05-2015 01:50 PM

I keep trying to go to stash busting, but then something catches my eye. :)

coopah 06-05-2015 03:30 PM

Working on stash busting here! So I needed (needed not just wanted) a specific type of fabric for a Christmas gift. So 5 pieces of fabric later, I have what I wanted for the gift. Plus...more. Too many cute fabrics out there. Too many ideas. Need to stay home and sew!!

mjhaess 06-10-2015 07:35 AM

Always building it seems...

notmorecraft 06-10-2015 10:46 AM

Trying to build a stash as I don't really have a lot of fabric unused yet.

Sewnoma 06-10-2015 11:15 AM

I'm trying to seek equilibrium. I'm not really deliberately building OR busting, I'm just trying to maintain status quo. I like my stash as it is now - big enough that I have a lot of options but small enough that it's physically manageable and I can mostly remember what I have on hand.

I'm slowly losing the battle and building more than I'm busting, though. I have been too busy with work to have energy to sew much lately but I always have energy to shop online! But work is starting to lighten up and I have some vacation time blocked off at the end of the year that should help me move back towards balance.

Betty J 06-11-2015 12:40 AM

Looks like most of us row the same boat. Recently I went through some of my fabric and what fabric I thought I would never use I listed on E-Bay. However, I did mange to sell most of it. Maybe it's time to go through and choose some more. I am also thinking that after I retire I won't be able to afford to buy fabric so best buy it while we still working. I would like to think that I can manage to sew most of my stash into projects before I depart this life, but I think I am hoping..............

ManiacQuilter2 06-11-2015 05:42 AM

I am trying to decrease my stash and waistline. Not succeeding on either fronts!
