Has anyone had this happen to them? I am trying to figure out how mine was taken by someone. It's never out of my hands/purse so I am positive it came from an online purchase. The only things I have purchased 'lately' are books from Amazon and I hate to say it a variety of LQS's for a quilt where different shops have a block you purchase and if wanted one of their completion layouts, this one is using Civil War Fabrics.

It has tried to purchase a $900.00 watch, download music and use it for something from Amazon. Amazon was my saving grace because they caught another someone trying to use my number and denied the purchase.

The bank is suppose to replace funds shown and any other charges which could arise from this.

What's your thoughts? Any hints as to protecting oneself from every having this happen again. I use my debit for everything. I love to use it the ease of online shopping. I used it a lot for one of my daughter's wedding and was afraid something like this would happen then with the many online purchases occurring, nope/nada.

I would suggest getting 1 credit card with a fairly low credit limit and using that and that alone for all online purchases.

It happened to me a couple years ago. Luckily, my bank called me before letting a huge charge go through. My number was being used to purchase a $1000 item online. When I went to check out the site they told me, it was all in Arabic writing!

I had been to a store a few days earlier that I rarely visit and had used the card there. The people there, or in the clearinghouse they used, may have copied my number, and sold or passed it on. Who knows?

My bank immediately cancelled my card, and within a couple days, I had a new one in hand. Now they have disposable credit card numbers you can use - you transfer the amount you need to pay to the disposable number, use it once, then toss it. Ask your bank about them. Online, I stick with PayPal. I've only had to register a complaint with them once, but it was resolved quickly.

I too try to use PayPal for online purchases. Then use only ONE card for online purchases for those that don't accept pay pal. Make it a very low limit. I've never had my card used by anyone except me, but caution is always used. NEVER let it out of your sight at a restaurant or store, etc.

My daughter's friend just had his card used a couple of weeks ago. He seldom uses this card, so was able to track it back to a restaurant, and they caught the girl who works the cash register. She apparently had written down his card number, and the 3 digit code on back. I've not known anyone personally who has had it happen through online purchases.

I had a waitress take my card at a resteraunt.....she went behind a wall. I got up and followed her --- caught her JUST as she was showing my card to someone else. The manager came in all huffy about me being in that area. I pointed out the register was on the other side of the resteraunt and she had no business being in the kitchen with my card. BOY, the look he gave her -- I have a feeling she lost her job. I, on the other hand, take cash when we go out and only use my cards where I KNOW it's safe.....like my LQS! :mrgreen:

Oh -- and I do Ebay and Amazon with PayPal - never had a problem

I haven't ever had that happen, but have heard of it happening to other people. What a scary time for you. I'm glad your bank took care of you.

Never happened to me, but my sister had that problem. They never did figure out what happened with hers.
When you are using it on line make sure you are using a secure site. To check that it is a secure site on the address bar it shoud have httpS if there is no S after the http it is NOT a secure site.

I've never had my debit card frauded -you have to use a pin number with it, here anyway. However, I have had my credit card cancelled a few times by my bank because when they suspect that someone has copied the numbers, they cancel the whole series of cards with those numbers on them, or every card from that bank that has passed at that store within a certain amount of time. So while noone has ever managed to purchase anything with my card, it has been cancelled as a preventative measure a few times.
My friend had someone in Spain buy a bunch of plane tickets on her card this week... she never used her card there, lol! Her bank called her and inquired about the tickets... i'm sure the airline company voided the tickets so the idiots who bought them will get a nice surprise when they try to board the plane!
The new credit cards around here have a microchip in them, where you have to enter a pin number to be able to aprove the purchase, but not all stores have the new debit/credit chip processor, so some places still swipe the card, and it can still be used online with the numbers on the front and back.
