My dad was teased after my baby sister was born, and was asked what they'd call the next one - he said there'd be no more and this one should've been named Enoch! as in ENOUGH!

Actually her name was Barbara!

P.S. There was only 4 in the family, so not like there were many.

One advantage of this type of name is on a resume. Not that this happens in today's enlightened age, but the application will not be shuffled to the bottom of the list because of it belongs to a female.

susie0808 10-05-2011 05:51 AM

It's bad enough that these kids are saddled with long hard to pronounce last names!!! Now it's first names too!!

I guess they what their kids to be remember for something!

sandpat 10-05-2011 05:55 AM

My Dad's name on his birth certificate was Dickey...he legally changed it to Richard. I can't pronounce most of the kid's names around here...I think lots of them walk through the drug store to get the names...like....Tylenol..Ibuprophin...etc...:D

sandpat 10-05-2011 05:56 AM

Oops...must need more coffee...sorry for the double post!

dixiechunk 10-05-2011 06:28 AM

Well, actually a lot of my thoughts are stupid these days but I will share a short story. My grandmother always wanted twin girls. She was going to name them Ina Elizabeth and Iris Estelle. My grandfather always says he wanted no part in that and apparently neither did God 'cause they had 4 sons and one single girl. Wasn't my mother the lucky one!

PensyDutch 10-05-2011 06:34 AM

I once knew a lady who was shocked to find she was pregnant. When she gave birth to triplet girls, she named them; Erica -E
Page -P
Taylor-T
after the EPT pregnacy test she took. Creative, huh?

fatquarters 10-05-2011 07:18 AM

I know a family that named their children. Penny, Paula, and Peter, their last name is Piper

Honeynga 10-05-2011 07:22 AM

I have a cousin whose last name is Woodruff....her husband is called Woody and their son is Chipper !

Also had a relative by marriage that was named Sandy Beech, she married and her name was then Sandy Beech Head !

I had a doctor that was doing my breast biopsy - the girls in the x-ray dept were trying to keep me laughing and upbeat (of course I was on "happy pills") - they said your Dr's name is Richard Head but we call him Dick Head. We were snickering and carrying on until the doc came in the room to shove the what looked like a ten inch needle through my breast. Luckily we all laughed and had a good time before I knew it I was waking up in recovery (it was benign.)

The very worse one I heard of was a lady that needed service on her typewriter, and I asked for a name that the serviceman could ask for and she said her name was Urinal. I had to put her on hold and laugh, Seriously, what mama would do that!!!

Friend from the old neighborhood had a son that they named after him, John, which for the little guy became John-John. To this day, this 6ft+ 250lb man is still called John-John by those who remember him as a little boy.

John-John's Grandfather was named Fred. He had a son that they named Fred Jr. aka Freddie and the father became known as "Old Man Fred". Freddie had a son who was named Fred III, and you got it, "Little Freddie"

A friend has 2 daughters a month ago her oldest had a boy Bentley Jaug (jag) and the other is having a girl to be saddled with Sereinidy Lynn-Marie Lafferty. My DIL's name is Arrittia pronounced Aretta-( her mother could not spell) -waiting at the Dr. office for her turn- the nurse finally called her name and we just sat there she pronounced it A-ree- sha a 1/2hr later she went to see why it was taking so long and the nurse had her point out where she signed in and she said I called your name and you weren't here She now spells it Aretta

Unfortunately, you can't make this stuff up.

In college I worked for a clinic that was part of the local health department.

One of my patients names was pronounced C'Phyllis spelled Syphilis.....

NEVER call Syphilis in and STD Clinic.

Unfortunately, the way some people pronounce "Yarina",which is a perfectly nice Russian name, ends up sounding fairly similar.
I knew a lady who had triplet boys and she named them all "John" but in different languages: Ian, Ivan and Sean (her husband was "John").

shnnn 10-05-2011 08:23 AM

I had a friend named her son Nicholas Nicholson. And I totally agree with naming kids Tommy, Ricky, Bobby etc... cute when they are little, but can't imagine calling a 60 year old man Timmy.

Rhonda 10-05-2011 08:23 AM

My DH was named after an uncle Glen. One N it gets my DH upset if people spell it with 2 n's says Glenn is NOT his name!

DH insisted on nameing one of our boys after himself. so we have Glen Wayne (DH and Glen Wayne II. We called our son Little Glen the whole time he was growing up. He is now 6' 3" and had twin sons. When Devon was 3 I called his dad little Glen. Devon looked up and up and up at his dad and said "He doesn't look LITTLE to me!" LOL He is still little Glen to the family or GW

My DDs inlaws - FIL's father was Cleo Jewel and so FIL is Cleo Jewel II and one of their sons is Cleo Jewel III. FIL's dad was called Joe and FIL goes by Cleo and of course Cleo III is called Little Cleo tho he is 6 ft and overweight. It does cause some confusion when talking about them!

Rhonda 10-05-2011 08:29 AM

Two of my BILS are Danny Allen and Donnie Ray. Not Daniel and Donald but Danny and Donnie. My MIL has 9 kids and one son my DH was named after an uncle Glen and the one girl is GLenda. The rest are all D names It can get confusing! Danny Delbert Donnie David Dale Dennis Dougles. The dr spelled Doug's name with an e not an a so it has stayed that way.

And my son named his twins with Ds Devon and Daymon.

My aunt named hers all in J My aunt Janet and uncle Jerry have Jimmie Dean/ Jon / Julie / and twins Jerald and Jarren

Greenheron 10-05-2011 08:49 AM

This reminds me of all the extremely "punny" names in the Dick Tracy comic strip: Sam Catchem, B.O. Plenty, the father of Sparkle Plenty and uncle of Vera Alldid Plenty. Vera's daddy wanted a boy and had daughter after daughter until he finally got a son and told his wife she could stop having babies because "Ve're all did, now."

I had a student years ago: Shannon Doha _______. I puzzled over Doha for a long time until the light finally came on: "Shenandoah"!

auniqueview 10-05-2011 09:16 AM

I have cousins Strawberry Fields and Ocean Storm. It's not only celebrities that need a reality check...duh.

Once upon a long ago time... someone told me there was a Dr. Donald Duckles, who was a pediatrician.

So I googled the name. And there is indeed a Dr. Donald Duckles, but (unfortunately for kids) he is a surgeon.

auniqueview 10-05-2011 09:29 AM

We had a patient come in, whose name was Ripley Rasmus. My receptionist made him show her his driver's license. I wanted to set him up with another patient....Bunny Poppleton. I always wondered why their parents hung those names on them. By the way Rip is a really well to do architect, so the name did him no harm, lol.

Do not laugh too hard! I am an old OB nurse, we actually had a local woman name her twins Lemonjello and Orangejello...pronounced with a French accent! And beware her wrath if someone pronounced them without the accent. A good friend of mine was working in a dermatology office when the boys were young. She picked up the charts and went to the waiting room to call them back. She pronounced it Lemon Jello and Orange Jello and the mother went off on her! True story as I live and die, I would not make this up. My personal favorites were Vageena and Urethra.

When my daughter played baseball there was a family who had named their children Liberty, Freedom and Justice. The mom was expecting at the time; I lost track of them, but I wondered if she named the baby For All.

I was blessed with one of those names. No one usually gets it right the first time when they pronounce it and some dont even try. I have 5 sisters and they also have unique names. But I really do love having such a name cause I have never met anyone else with my name. Just look at my name and see if any of you have ever heard it before.

Dretha

kdid82 10-05-2011 11:47 AM

Makes me think of my oldest sister's name... Alethea... Most people mis-pronounce it as "al-THEE-a" but it is actually "a-LEE-tha". She goes by Lee!

mary quilting 10-05-2011 11:57 AM

a friend was going to name her daughter Delta last name was Jett. Both sets of grandparents said no!!

how about
Dr Limber chiropractor
Dr Manntooth dentist

Dena789 10-05-2011 11:58 AM

Ok -- the name game. I have 4 sisters and I'm the youngest.

#1 (A) is Alethea (a-LEE-tha)
#2 (B) is Beatrice

#5 (E) is Edna

Ok so #3 and #4 they got out of sinc because they were twins and named them Marlyne and Marion... I always say they should have been (C) Carlyne and (D) Darlyne! LOL Oh well!

I did ask mom once if she knew she'd started at the top of the alphabet...

Dena789 10-05-2011 11:59 AM

We had a friend who was a baker. His last name was Goodbun.
