in a while, there is something that comes down the pike that is of real importance.



What is the difference between http and https ?
Don't know how many of you are aware of this difference, but it is worth sending to any that do

not.....

**The main difference between http:// and https://

is it's all about keeping you secure** HTTP

stands for Hyper Text Transfer Protocol



The S (big surprise) stands for

"Secure".. If you visit a website or web page, and look at the

address in the web browser, it will likely begin with the

following:http:///.




This means that the website is talking to your browser using the regular 'unsecured language. In other words, it is possible for someone to

"eavesdrop" on your computer's conversation with the website.
If you fill out a form on the website, someone might see the information you send to that site.

This is why you never ever enter your credit card number in an http website! But if the web address begins with https://, that basically means your computer is talking to the website in a secure code that no one can eavesdrop on.



You understand why this

is so important, right?

If a website ever asks you to

enter your credit card
information, you should automatically

look to see if the web address begins withhttps://.

If it doesn't, You

should NEVER enter sensitive information....such as a credit card

number, SS # etc.


PASS IT ON (You may save someone a

lot of grief!!!!!!!).

I never knew this. Very important info to know as I buy a lot of fabrics etc from the US.

a side note... when linking to a secured page with https:// delete the s to make it clickable :wink: :D:D:D

Just a side note... I believe that the only pages where it's IMPORTANT for the page to be SSL-secured (https://) is checkout pages and logon pages (such as for online banking).

Other than that, it really doesn't matter. Sometimes we get calls or e-mails from potential customers who are upset that our entire site is not secure. But why should it be? It really doesn't matter which fabrics or patterns you look at. We don't have any naughty ones anyway. :-) The checkout pages are secure and those are the only ones that count.

and another side note- if your job happens to take away certain sites by blocking them- you can add the s and it will let you look lol.

My website for the rescue is not secure, because there is no reason for it to be. But my "donate" button goes through Paypal, to protect both sides- in a secure setting. It's not such a big deal for a website that is informational not to be secure. It's only when money or private information is passed that it's a concern.

Thank you for posting that. Although I am aware of the meaning of https with the "s" meaning secure & having a little lock icon I know that many are not. I was ordering a gift card for my inlaws in FL last week from one of their favorite restaurants & I did notice that when I was to put in my credit card info the page was not secure. I had some trouble trying to contact them so I ended up ordering a gift card from somewhere else that had a secure page. I was telling my friend about this & she said she never looks, so I was glad to be able to enlighten her!

It *is* an important difference!

I'm still amazed that there are people who order from us by e-mail ... and include their credit cards right in the e-mail. That really makes me cringe!
