You are right.....A gift certificate would be a perfect gift. My daughter is a teacher and believe me, she spends a whole lot of money out of her own pocket for school supplies and even books for her class. She has been a teacher for 15 years and this goes on year after year. Many teachers give so much. We never realize how much they do.

When my son was in pre school, every week i would bring in a craft for the kids.ther were only seven in the class.
i would also bake cookies or cupcakes once a week.im not rich, i worked at a fast food restaurant on min. Wage,but tried to help where i could. I always had pcs of fab i could give to the kids to do something with. Now i makes toys for the less fortunate alogn with scarves, hats and quilts. I would donate my time also.i would also make something nice for a fundraiser to buy thinvs the s hool needed.

My DIL and my MIL taught elementary students. I saw many of their teacher gifts in their next yard sale. I taught high school students, and they didn't usually give gifts--and that was fine with me.
