Well I was going to start today but because of all the snow I will wait till T-day we were going to church tonight for our Thanksgiving service but we have 5" + of snow and it will not get above freezing so I get to spend the day with hubby and girls and HEY we might as well cook!!

maryel 11-23-2010 09:15 AM

Monday started the custard fillings for my pies and made cranberry relish and pumpkin and cranberry bread. Today got my creamed onion dish mostly assembled, just have to all bread crumb topping Thanksgiving morning and bake. Will make pie crust and bake a pumpkin pie tomorrow along with extra stuffing and an extra turkey breast that I will bake. Good thing I got an early start!

jeanequilts 11-23-2010 10:18 AM

Made my turkey gravy:
Makes 6 cups:

3 lbs turkey wings (4)
2 medium onions, peeled and quartered
1 cup water
8 cups chicken broth
3/4 cup carrot, chopped
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
3/4 cup flour
2 tablespoons butter
1/2 teaspoon pepper
Change Measurements: US | Metric
Directions:
Prep Time: 30 mins
Total Time: 2 1/2 hrs
1 Heat oven to 400°F.
2 Arrange wings in a single layer in a large roasting pan.
3 Scatter onions over top.
4 Roast 1 1/4 hours until wings are browned.
5 Put wings and onions in a 5-6 quart pot.
6 Add water to roasting pan and stir to scrape up any brown bits on the bottom.
7 Add the brown bits to the pot.
8 Add 6 cups broth (refrigerate the remaining 2 cups) add carrot and thyme.
9 Bring to a boil.
10 Reduce heat and simmer uncovered 1 1/2 hours.
11 Remove wings to cutting board.
12 Save wing meat for another use if you wish, or discard.
13 Strain broth into a 3 quart saucepan, pressing vegetables to extract as much liquid as possible.
14 Discard vegetables.
15 Skim fat off broth and discard.
16 If time permits, refrigerate broth overnight to make fat skimming easier.
17 Whisk flour into remaining 2 cups broth until well blended.
18 Bring broth in pot to a gentle boil.
19 Whisk in broth flavored mixture and boil 3-4 minutes to thicken gravy and cook flour.
20 Stir in butter and pepper.
21 Serve now or freeze up to 6 months

My son and granddaughter decided we should go out so I wouldn't have to cook all day. So, we are having our Thanksgiving Wednesday night and I still have to cook Thursday as I have five elderly gentlemen my husband wants us to take dinner to ON Thanksgiving. So, at least we will have leftovers to munch on Friday, Sat & Sund. while I finish all of my gifts

leonajo 11-23-2010 12:06 PM

I made cinnamon apples twice, first batch failed terribly lol Cleaned out by fridges, gathered in my pototoes and sweet pototoes, have the leaves in the dining room table , table clothes laid out but not ironed :) Will make most of my cold foods Wednesday, be up really early Thursday. We could be having ice/ sleet Thurs morning, kinda worried about the electricity...would like to make my pies tomorrow but afraid my crust might get soggy......me and pie dough r not friends...lol

FancyFoot 11-23-2010 12:12 PM

I am picking up my free pumpkin pie at the local casino wednesday. :) :) :) :) :) :)

pheasantduster 11-23-2010 12:22 PM

Just took my squash pie out of oven. Use my own butternut squash which seems rather stringy this year. Pie looks good! Hubby made 2 apple pies this AM - cooked my turnip, squash and sweet potato. Tomorrow cook turkey and will reheat and plate on Thanksgiving. I make a strawberry, pineappple and banana jello mold with sour cream layered in the middle. Pretty and good. Will have 10 people including a new 'fellow' my daughter is bringing. And, of course, the Patriots -that's the football team not our NewEngland ancestors (lol) - in the background. Go Pats! Wishing all the very best - Happy Thanksgiving

StitchnFind 11-23-2010 02:03 PM

I am making my dressings and a spice carrot cake. No pumpkin pie this year for us. I am looking forward to that hot open face turkey sandwich the day after.
Happy Thanksgiving All!

annyroony2 11-23-2010 02:51 PM

I want to skip Thursday and so straight to the leftovers. They are always better the day after.

dream56 11-23-2010 03:11 PM

I'm in charge of desserts - but if I make them before tommorow my dh will eat them. So Wed is cooking day that way he won't have time to eat them all.
He was alreaady looking and asking today.

quilter2 11-23-2010 09:16 PM

Today I chopped the celrey and onion and toasted and cut up the bread for the dressing. Tomorrow I'll make the dressing and bake my pies, so good to get a head start.

I have to cook my sweet potatoes for the casserole, will put it together tomorrow. Will cook up the stuffing, get that ready for tomorrow, will put together the wild rice casserole, making an orange jello with cool whip for the grandkids, they won't eat the rutabaga salad (my favorite). Then tomorrow AM early - like 3:00 AM, I will bake the pumpkin pie and Paula Deen's Bourbon Pecan Pie. Can't wait to taste that. Have to get the turkey in early - eating at 3:00 and Tom weighs 23 lbs. It is 4:30 AM and I think I best get my act together. Edie

One good thing about a Minnesota Thanksgiving is all the cooking you do and the refrigerator doesn't hold it all, especially the turkey. We have a walk in refrigerator freezer. In the summer, it is called a Porch!!!!!!!!!! Also, if you are making an All American Thanksgiving dinner, for what it is worth, after the dinner is over, cut the meat off the carcass (takes up less room in the refrigerator) and save the carcass and if you have a freezer that will hold it put it in a plastic bag and save it for down the road (later on) and you can make the best darn soup in the world. Also, most important, as soon as the dinner is done, take the stuffing OUT of the bird. It can brew bacteria and ruin the turkey and the stuffing. Put the stuffing in just before you put it in the oven and take it out as soon as you are done with dinner.

So, to all of you Aussies, Happy Thanksgiving. It is such a good inside feeling to be thankful for what we have. God bless our soldiers, bring them home when the time is right and have an enjoyable day. One thing - will you get the Macy's parade and football (I mean American football), too? Happy day!!!!! Edie

aussiegirl 11-24-2010 03:02 AM

Yes we can see the parade and football on some channels here on paid tv.

diannemc 11-24-2010 03:35 AM

Good! When you see Santa at the end of the parade, you know Christmas is coming! Even though I am a Christian and know the difference, I always get a tear in my eye when Santa comes down the street - I think it reverts back to when #1 son was little and we always watched the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade. Funny how traditions start, right? Should be a good game, t00! Edie

OmaForFour 11-24-2010 06:15 AM

OHHHHHH! Could you please post your recipe for the yeast rolls? You would make my Thanksgiving heavenly if you would!

We are having Thanksgiving Dinner at my daughter's house and we have a LOT to be thankful for!!!!!
The other day she was travelling to bring a meal to a family who just lost a loved one.
Someone travelling in the opposite direction must have gotten confused on the turn in the road and went straight, heading right for her! She had my grandkids in the car.
All she could do was pull off the road up against the fence of a lumber yard and continually blow her horn and PRAY!
Two feet from hitting her headon, the driver swerved and missed her!
When she went back the next morning to see where she had pulled off, she realized that she had pulled into a small patch of solid dirt between two large gullies! GOD SENT THE ANGELS WHO WERE RIDING WITH HER!!!!!

I am making Cirtrus Semifreddo, Pumpkin Pie, Carrots glazed with honey & mustard, Spinach Maria (a special recipe from a restaurant in TN) and Snowcapped butternut squash casserole to take with us.

sandpat 11-24-2010 06:25 AM

Ha...I just wish that all I did was put gas in the car!!

I'm making pies today..fixed the cornbread and white bread for the dressing yesterday. Its just us, so I just throw together the parts we really like. Actually, I like the leftovers best.

jbj137 11-24-2010 10:12 AM

I don't have to cook this year.
My Sis and new Hubby are doing it.
I only have to do candied yams.

MadQuilter 11-24-2010 10:16 AM

Edie, I saw an episode where Paula made that pie and have the recipe, but totally forgot it!! Maybe for Christmas...let us know how it comes out!

I am contributing a pumpkin pie, 4-layer dessert, and broccoli salad. Have almost everything done now-will do the broccoli and bacon tomorrow so that both are crisp. I am traveling with my items to my mom's later today. I hope I don't forget anything!

poodlemom 11-24-2010 04:58 PM

Raised 3 turkeys since spring for this fall. They went to slaughter last week. Have the 30 pound bird defrosting, shopped today and baking 2 pies right now. I am so done for today. Happy Thanksgiving All

sandpat 11-24-2010 04:59 PM

Well....made my Pumpkin pie today...oops..knife accidently cut into it tonight...oops!

Magdalena 11-24-2010 05:11 PM

Reading all of this is making me hungry. My DH does Thanksgiving dinner and I do Noche Buena (Christmas Eve). We will be alone this Holiday - daughter cannot come - she lives in Oregon. More for us, our 4 cats, dog and birdies. But, we celebrated with my Mama, older sister, nieces and nephew last week. - Yup, I cooked.

dsb38327 11-24-2010 05:33 PM

I made our Thanksgiving dinner today. It was wonderful!
The meal was excellent, turkey was perfect, everyone was happy and we all ate more than our share.
My glass is 1/2 full.
I needed 45 minutes more 'oven time'. The turkey was out and the casserole dishes were ready to go in.
It had been cloudy and rainy all day. I was at the sink and thought 'the sun is glaring on the oven door glass.
How strange. THERE IS NO SUN!'
As I turned around I saw the heating element finish flaming. Went out like a candle on a cold dark night.
The phone rang, my daughter said "I am sorry we are going to be about an hour late".
My sweetie ran to the store, changed the heating element and the casseroles were coming out of the oven when my daughter arrived. What a wonderful day.
Tomorrow we go to his relatives for Thanksgiving #2.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone. May you and yours be blessed.
