I got my home insurance bill and it was $3100 higher! I called the agent right away. He said he was dreading when the new premiums went out, they all had outrageous increases. We have had this same insurance for 25 or so years and it has never increased this much at one time. The agent said it was due to the health care bill being passed. It was complicated and he couldn't understand it either but that was the reason he was told. Health care? He said give him a few days to see what he could do. I told him DH and I will never agree pay that for the same coverage we have had. He called me today and said he got $2000 taken off the increase. That's still a $1100 increase we are stuck with. I got to searching around on the internet and found that most vehicle/home insurance companies are connected to health insurance investments and policies and the change will affect them in a few years when it goes into effect. Funny no one mentioned car and property insurance when pushing for the healthcare reform. I don't know if we will keep this policy but it may be cheaper than what a new company will charge. We are stuck to pay a high price either way.

Ouch, I dread seeing my new premiums!!! It is going to be hard, with so many out of work, taking lessor paying jobs. etc...

Pam 04-29-2010 01:14 PM

I decided not to send either of the things I wrote, probably NOT suitable for the board.

pocoellie 04-29-2010 01:34 PM

What insurance company do you use? What percentage increase is that, if you don't mind me asking. That's totally insane!! My husband thinks that the insurance companies are just jacking up the prices so that they get to keep their profits.

no1jan 04-29-2010 01:39 PM

I just got my premium bill for the next year 6/10 through 6/11 and it was less than $1000.00. I don't have an expensive house, but figured I would have a raise in my premium as I had a claim this year. They had to pay $6500.00 for a new roof.

I hope for yours and everyone else's that it was a computer error. :( :(

I would definitely vent to. I am on disability and only get $9000.00 a year!!! I have Allstate.

marsye 04-29-2010 01:40 PM

We live in Arkansas too. We pay about 800.00 per year with Farm Bureau. Thats plenty!!!!

3100.00 increase??? You must live in a mansion!!!

hazeljane 04-29-2010 01:44 PM

I worked in the insurance industry (property/casualty) for
25 years. Most home/auto carriers are NOT health carriers. There are almost no companies left that do both, so I think that is BS.

One of the reasons is that auto and home and commercial carriers for most of a century did not make money on the premiums they took in. When I was at the Hartford, we were doing well if we paid out $1.05 in claims for each $1.00 we took in. The money was made by investing the premiums, in some complicated scheme. When interest rates come down, that doesn't work. Now companies have to charge enough premium to make a profit. Of course, I have also known companies with some serious ethical problems who make money hand over fist by using shoddy underwriting practices.

I don't know where you are, but some companies jack up the homeowners big time if they have to pay catastrophe claims in the area (or anywhere). Floods, hurricanes, earthquakes, etc. i would definitely shop around. It may be the whole area that is being hit, and it may be your company is jacking with prices. It never hurts to shop around.

Many car insurance companies provides medical policies for individuals or families. My DD has her medical Blue Cross and Blue Shield through her car insurance. It's cheaper for her then what is offered at her job. My SIL is a VP for a big insurance underwriter firm in NYC. Her firm underwrites for big insurance companies. I don't understand it enough to know but I sent her a copy of my bill and she said she would check out what's going on. She said she and all the execs. had to read every page of the health care bill and new regulations would be made in the next few years. Much more then anyone realizes. I'm not doubting what the agent told me, he is just trying to make a living, but something is fishy about this increase, living in a trailer or mansion it should a fair deal.

i agree. we still have our 'good driver' deduction on our car insurance and our homeowner's only went up a small amount from last year. we use the same company for both - state farm insurance. so there are better companies out there. time to start looking.

i think private investors are yelping because they lost money in the stock market and now want to make up some money from their shares in the insurance companies on your nickel.

We had State Farm homeowners (for 39 years!) and Geico auto. They were both going up, so I investigated and found out that Liberty Mutual was much less for both home and auto. If you call them for a quote you need to ask about college or workplace discounts. It saved us a lot.

Chasing Hawk 04-29-2010 03:41 PM

We pay 1200 a yr for house insurance, 1000 every 6 months for full coverage one 3 trucks and a Harley. My health insurance is covered by my tribe. My husband is self pay at the doctors office. The tribe won't allow spouses on the insurance any more due to a few greedy people. Who were married at the time then divorced but never canceled the insurance.

earthwalker 04-29-2010 03:49 PM

Glad you are able to get someone to look it over for you.

We recently had a terrible storm here....masses of hail damaged cars (thousands) and homes. We put in an insurance claim for damages caused when part of our neighbour's tree came crashing over the fence, tore up the front of the carport and damaged some equipment and building supplies. The insurers are completely overwhelmed by this freak event, you can't even get through via phone to keep track of the work orders and claims....I shudder to think of the premium rises at the end of the year.

Gramof6 04-29-2010 03:50 PM

We have Farmers Group Ins. on our 2 vehicles and our home. Never have a claim & have been with the Company for years & years. Our homeowners went up $600 this year. I think that is too much of a jump. Our Son also had ins. with this same Co. and his went up that much also. He bailed and took out ins. with Liberty Mutual and with their cars & home, it saved him $700 a year. So we are going to check into that Co. as well.

Find your Insurance Commissioner through your State Capitol's phone menu. You might have to go through the State's Attorney General's Office, and make a formal complaint. I agree with one of these ladies, that is BS. but someone might not try to find some answers. I would and did. A few years ago they just kept increasing (calling it cost of replacement increase) and I asked them to just stop upping it just because they thought since it is a small and older home that dummies lived in it. We'll see in July when it comes around again. STAND UP and SPEAK UP.....you's your livelihood and your country, too. Blessings, Ruth

(whewwwww, I got a bit hot!)

shaverg 04-29-2010 05:37 PM

Sounds like something is up with the company. We just got our homeowners it stayed the same. We live in CA. it did not go up. You should go to your Insurance commisioner.

emmy 04-29-2010 05:47 PM

Five years ago ('05) State Farm increased ours from 1 thousand to over 5 thousand and there wasn't a Health Care bill. They used the excuse of Hurricane Andrew ('92). After limiting increases in FL, the companies are now meeting with the Commissioner to get 10% increases in 3 areas, and one could fall under any or all of the three areas. Someone told me that a percentage of premiums collected in a state, go tothe company's headquarters. They can then say that we need to increase premiums in your state to play claims because there's not enough money.

grammyp 04-29-2010 05:48 PM

Oh my gosh! We get ours in December, I'm dreading it already. Guess I know what we will get each other this year.

amandasgramma 04-29-2010 07:48 PM

Guess I'll be calling my insurance company (State Farm) and ask!!! That's an outrageous increase!

mom-6 04-29-2010 08:14 PM

So far we've had very little increase in our homeowners insurance...quite reasonable in fact. Now our vehicle insurance is another story, but mainly that is because we still have the kids vehicles on our policy because it's cheaper in the long run doing it that way.

CarrieAnne 04-30-2010 04:02 AM

Wow, thats horrible! Mine went up a little too, does every year, but my car insurance went WAY up because I have a 16 yo boy driving now! I ont even want to know how much my Health insurance will be going up.....

sewjoyce 04-30-2010 05:33 AM

I got a notice in the mail this week that my health insurance is going up $90 PER MONTH for a total of $530 or $6,360 per year. That does not include Rx plus I have a $1,000 deductible. I have cut down on my meds and the cost is still over $400 per month for the ones I don't want to live without....I am still 6 years away from getting medicare... I am just sick over this but sure can't afford to go to the doctor's office.... :D

butterflywing 04-30-2010 07:22 AM

my jaw is dropping reading this. our homeowner's with state farm is less than $1000 for a medium size 3 bedroom ranch w/full basement and enclosed porch and deck, 2 car garage. that's for full replacement value in the NEW YORK SUBURBAN area, where building costs are through the roof.

what are they insuring for you? it must be an awful lot to cost that much, or maybe you made a major claim this past year? or live in a flood plain?

as someone else here said, there's an Office of Insurance and Fraud that you can call. they answer promptly. i called them when i changed health insurers and had a bad time. it's a State Office but they try to work with the state that holds your policy. most times they can. google XXXXXXX State Department of Insurance and Fraud (fill in your state}. notice how insurance and fraud go together?

littlehud 04-30-2010 08:29 AM

I'm afraid to see what my increase will be. I'll find out in August.

reneebobby 04-30-2010 09:27 AM

WOW I know when hurricane katrina and the other one came through my insurance went up 300.00 and HELLO I live in OHIO. No claim in 13 years I've had the house and I had to deal with the increase. It seems like when disaster strikes we all pay. So I called to link car and home HA that was a joke and a half my home owners would have gone up 1000.00 to link them. There was no 10% decrease. hehehe My insurance company sent a copy of my home owners insurance to there head quaters and said look 1000.00 cheaper why are we so expensive. She got no response.

JoyVoltenburg 04-30-2010 10:08 AM

My mom and dad - who are retired on a fixed income - had their homeowners insurance thru State Farm for 25 years or more. They just cancelled them. Didn't raise their premium - cancelled it. Their agent died last year and they got a new one. He claimed it was because they had two claims in the past 2 years (lightning knocked out their tv and one small electrical fire that did very minimal damage). They moved the car insurance to a different company after that, but couldn't afford the homeowners insurance too. Right now, they're searching for a homeowners policy they can afford. I have nothing good to say about State Farm.

jljack 04-30-2010 01:16 PM

I used to work for a large insurance company, and my boss was a very honest person. He told me (and I have no reason to doubt him, and lots of evidence to support his claim) that insurance companies own most of the real estate (read "big buildings") in most of the large cities of the US. They make more money than nearly any other industry. They pay their employees the least, they have the most investments, they are the most stingey with their customers. Yet we are all "required" in one way or another to do business with these companies. We are on the hook whether we like it or not. I don't believe any of the explanations about "Healthcare" requirements causing increases. They want more money, and they will find ANY excuse to get it. I also don't like that they sell their company stock on the open market. Any company that is publicly owned only wants to make more money, any way they can. I don't think it's right or fair that they are public companies. I think all insurance companies should be non-profit, and prove that their expenses require premium increases. My .02, and MHO. :-)
