for those who don't know the history of the US Memorial Day
Thank you, Nan, for the gentle reminder of what this day is for.
I do know what Memorial Day is and I remember it use to be Decoration Day.
I saw a sign that said, "it's not National Barbecue Day!"
lest anyone misunderstand my original post... i'm not judging anyone for any way they want to spend their day... i like history and found the link interesting. even this late in my life, i was not aware of the real history of the day.
I didn't misunderstand, Nan, I liked that someone reminded me of the true meaning of the holiday. We tend to forget our history lessons of long ago. :)
I can remember when I was younger seeing veteran clubs selling the paper poppies. I had completely forgotten about them. Thanks for sharing Nan!
Thanks for the link. As with many of our holidays, it's good to be reminded that there was a time when the word "sale" didn't automatically follow.
Yesterday, I bought a poppy outside the Big Box store where I was shopping. I remember my dad would talk of the meaning of the poppy sale and I remember memorizing the poem, In Flander's Field, when I was in high school. The meaning of Memorial Day is still remembered in many towns and homes and hearts..

actually there was a phenomenon of Northern and Southern ladies decorating the graves of soldiers from both sides, who were buried far from home. With the thought, I hope someone is doing the same for my loved one.
