had a TERRIBLE storm this afternoon and GOT HIT BY LIGHTNING
NO phone no dish tv!
phone guy is supposed to be here tomorrow morning, tv guy not til friday.. geez
borrowing neighborhood wireless.. and it's sloooooooooooooooow

so not much online time
just glad it wasn't worse
blew holes in the yard - dirt, grass etc all over, think it hit a sweet gum in the back and then traveled toward the house and the ground line, knocked out the phone boohoo

pab58 08-22-2010 07:05 PM

Did anyone get hurt? I certainly hope not!!! That must have been terrifying!!

cherylynne 08-22-2010 07:07 PM

I'm glad that you are fine. That's a scarey experience.

craftybear 08-22-2010 07:15 PM

glad you are okay, take care and things will work out

lindyline 08-22-2010 07:20 PM

Wow, lightning strikes are terrifying when they're that close. Hope you're all ok, and no one got hurt.

JJs 08-22-2010 07:31 PM

nobody hurt but I'm petrified of lightning now-that was TOO close. Jay saw it hit (the flash) then saw the dirt flying as it traveled towards the house.
I'm not sure if that was the one that knocked out the phone because the phone 'rang' funny a couple times before that -
it also hit the ice maker (it's not hooked up) in the frig...
frig working ok

littlehud 08-22-2010 07:38 PM

That is terrible. I'm just glad you all are OK.

lynnie 08-22-2010 07:52 PM

Thank God you're o.k., what a horrible experience

nativetexan 08-22-2010 08:31 PM

My goodness. time to get a lightening rod!

tweetee 08-22-2010 09:11 PM

Goodness.....luck you were not on the phone at the time!!

I have heard that you should stay off the phone during a lightening storm, as it ot hits the lines, or anywhere near your house, the charge can travel through the wires and electocute the person on the end of the phone.

So glad no one was hurt, I bet it was reall LOUD too!!

Ditter43 08-22-2010 09:20 PM

Not a fun experience!!! And the smell is hard to forget!! Many years ago lightening hit a light pole across the street from our house. It was dark and I had been watching the storm from my bed.The smell of ozone was so strong it filled the house almost immediately!! Scarey!!!

Jim's Gem 08-22-2010 10:15 PM

I glad that you did not get hurt!!!!

CarrieAnne 08-23-2010 04:12 AM

Ditter is right! and especially if it is singed hair or burnt finger, not a memory you want. You are so blessed, I am. It will give you a righteous headache and black eyes and fry the hairclippers to you hubby's head !!! Be home soon and be safe. (The non working icemaker???) that is totally weird. You are doubly blessed.) Keep in touch.

Blessings,
Ruth

Hoorey! We have PHONE AND DSL again!! Guys just left - and they said lightning had hit out at the road....
So wonder how many times we were actually in the cross-hairs

Tink's Mom 08-23-2010 10:43 AM

It is really a nasty thing...that lightning...
I would recommend that you purchase good surge protecters for big electrical items(TV, Computers, Sewing Machines). A few months back, we took a big surge and it fried my surge protector, but saved my TV, Computer, and sewing machines...
It was worth the cost of a new one (about $100), rather than replacing all the others...

JJs 08-23-2010 02:40 PM

During storms we ALWAYS unplug tvs, dish receiver, computers, modems, etc.... had unplugged the modem from the phone line but didn't unhook the PHONES.
The computers are ALL on UPS' and everything else on surge protectors - but as I said, stuff is unplugged for storms - surge protectors won't work for lightning bolts!

We did lose the corded phone and the portable phones (set of 2) so bought a new set today, and a new corded phone - we live in a rural area with REMC - electric out is common and you need a corded phone for such times.

I also have some corded phones "put back just in case"

a light pole in town got hit and SHATTERED...

Kooklabell 08-23-2010 03:00 PM

Glad to hear that all is back to normal. So happy that you/family were not hurt. Lightening is so dangerous. I won't even let the dogs out when a storm is near.

pookie ookie 08-23-2010 03:21 PM

Stood next to a strike once. I'll never forget the taste of it. Glad no one's hurt.

Mimito2 08-23-2010 06:46 PM

On Fri 13th we had a lightning storm and it hit the transformer to our house. Called electric co to have them fix it. They pulled my meter!! Seems there was some kind of neutral problem and the breaker box was grounding out. We had to spend the weekend in a motel and run our freezers off a generator all weekend. Finally got an electrician on Mon afternoon and he replaced a 2 ft pc of ground wire. He said I was lucky it didn't set the house on fire...I have always enjoyed watching storms. Not anymore!!!!

Mousie 08-23-2010 07:10 PM

how scary!!! glad your ok!

harvsstuff 08-24-2010 12:44 PM

I live in Florida the lightning capital of the world! Been there, done that. Its old hand now. Denise

granniebj 08-24-2010 01:59 PM

Dang sounds like you were lucky and it could have been worse! I'm sure glad no one got hurt!

Kas 08-25-2010 10:29 AM

We just left LA! My sister lives in Andalusia and we went through some righteous storms on the way to and from Mobile. Lots of traveling. Glad you are ok!
