I have been collecting plastic bags for a long time. In fact I found a receipt in one of the bags dated 2005. I started with the idea of after seeing a tote crocheted with plastic bags. Sometimes I would go to a certain place because of the colorful bags. Some of the bags were from trips I took to Brazil and other states in the US. Anyway I finally made the bag. It looks a little wonky but that is what makes it unique. It took as long to make the plastic bag "yarn" as it did to crochet it. I plan on giving it to my DIL as she loves totes.

Recycled plastic bag tote.

What a great way to recycle plastic  It's neat that you were able to get some many colors!

Thanks for the link...I just watched it and am gonna save it for my mom.

She bought one of those recycled bags at a craft show and wanted to learn to make one....so now I can show her the link.

jaciqltznok 03-28-2011 06:24 PM

they made these in Ak in the village I lived in..then in 2004 they banned all plastic bags at the grocery stores...due to the landfill...when you live remote you have to watch those things...ehhhe

I remember granny made rugs out of bread bags back in the 70's!

 :D  great job!

pocoellie 03-28-2011 06:59 PM

Great job, love it. I also have instructions for also recycling VHS tapes, and tape recording, if anyone is interested in them, PM me.

That is just too cute. It is the first tote I have seen made from the plastic bags. However, several years back I was given a hat made from the old blue Walmart bags with the yellow smiley faces. I just loved that old thing but one day while out fishing it was gone with the wind.

dixiebelle162002 03-28-2011 10:23 PM

very unique!!!

Hosta 03-28-2011 10:37 PM

SueDor 03-29-2011 04:16 AM

Cute!

ptquilts 03-29-2011 04:27 AM

I have made a few of those but not so colorful - yours is really nice. THe first one I cut one continuous strip from the bags, then I learned to cut rings and join them together.
Now I am curious about the VHS tapes.

lynnsim 03-29-2011 04:32 AM

Pretty neat idea!

ssgramma 03-29-2011 04:33 AM

The colors are great!

I have a cowgirl hat made by an old friend. I need to get it out and wear it fishing or in the garden!

CarrieAnne 03-29-2011 04:44 AM

Neat wayto recycle! I love the idea of a rug too!

gramquilter2 03-29-2011 02:28 PM

Great way to recycle. It sure is colorful.

Fran Juern 03-29-2011 03:24 PM

When I was a little girl(sometime ago) we would always save the bread wrappers and cut them in strips. This was when we ocasionally bought "storebought bread" My Grandma would make rugs to put by the porch door to clean shoes before coming in from the garden etc.

GrannyHanaDa 03-29-2011 03:50 PM

What a great idea

butterflies5518 03-29-2011 05:50 PM

sweet idea for recycling!

cakebaker 03-29-2011 06:50 PM

I remember years ago we made rugs from bread bags, I think we need to do more trash to treasure. Pretty bag.

I use to save plastic bags, and crochet throw rugs from them. The only draw back is that they realy pull the dirt off the shoes and leaves it under the rug. { what a mess}

EdieClay 03-29-2011 08:08 PM

How cute ... I've never seen these before.

lynnie 03-30-2011 10:28 AM

i love it,it would make a great beach bag!

mrsk 03-30-2011 10:58 AM

My mother used to crochet the bread bags! I seem to remember a couple of rugs & maybe a cover for a potted plant.... She always knew how to use up every little bit of anything. That must be where I got the re-use it gene! LOL!The bag you made is really pretty. Thank you for showing us!
