Travel help
Several friends and I are planning to travel from California in the Fall to North and South Carolina, Georgia and maybe Alabama/Tennessee if time allows to visit quilt shops and see other sights along the way. We would appreciate any help with ideas for things we should see, places of interest, quilt shops, etc. We will have 2 weeks or so. Thanks for any help. Mary

Mary Jo's in Gastonia, NC. It is kind of like Rosie's in San Diego.
I know you said you are going in the fall, but the Row by Row Experience started yesterday, thru September 8, 2015. I know several who have enjoyed it. Each store does a row pattern. You collect the rows as you travel and put together a quilt. There are some really cute patterns. You might be able to buy the store kit to it after that. You would have to ask. |
Welcome to South Carolina. Definitely Mary Jo's. You are welcome to visit the Landrum Quilters' club meeting if you are near Gowensville, SC the second Thursday of every month at 9:30.

Go to Trip Advisor website. Look up the cities (larger ones) that you are traveling through. There are hotel, restaurants, tourist things to do listed on the site. While these are "reviewed", it is not a complete list of local options (no quilt shops are listed) at least it gives you a start. I use Trip Advisor all of the time! Very helpful..
The Quilters Travel Companion website lists the shops that subscrbe to their listings. The Rowby Row website would be a great resource for current shops that are participating. 2500+ shops have signed up in 2015! Download the Quilt Shop app. You will want to make a phone call to shops before assuming that they are still in operation. I see shops that closed 4-5 years ago listed. It is up to shops yo update their listings/delete, etc but many do not. travel safe sandy |
I'm not sure I could travel that distance and visit quilt shops in two weeks. We travel a lot and I did row by row last year with some friends and the stopping always takes much longer than what you think. Hope you have a wonderful trip. There are some beautiful things to see between the coasts.

You must go to Mary Jo's in Gastonia, NC. Huge store with good prices.

Are you flying or driving between the two points? Makes a big difference on what you can see. Lots of shops near the major interstate highways in most states.

I didn't participate in the Michigan Row by Row last year and really wanted a kit from one of the shops. Called them in early June and they had the kit from last year that I wanted. Drove to the shop and picked it up. Their Row for this year was posted in the shop. On Monday of this week I drove to the shop again. Now I have the kits from both years and I'm happy.
