Treasures from my childhood ... from Mom's sewing room

Have to share these pictures of the cabinet and thread chest my Dad made for my Mom many years ago. The corner cabinet was made for storing sewing supplies and the thread chest , well ... for tread!! My sister & I loved sitting in Dad's workshop and watching him build things & the smell of saw dust! I can remember these pieces being in the sewing room. Can you imagine storing your supplies and thread in these? They wouldn't hold much of my items from sewing room!!! But they hold wonderful memories. Enjoy!!

That thread chest is the most charming thing. How very well made both pieces are. Your daddy was a clever carpenter.

Such wonderful treasures! I'm so glad you have them to enjoy.

I couldn't help but be distracted by the very pretty quilt on the table. ;-)

Your dad was certainly a talented carpenter. I love the corner piece. It reminds me of an antique hutch I one had. Just lovely -- and your shared memories are so precious.

My daughter and son in law made me a thread chest for Christmas 9 years ago. I love it and I use it for and end table. I keep hand sewing supplies, knitting needles, and crochet hooks etc in it. Things I do while watching tv. Its a treasure to me because they made it. I know how you feel.

Wow, those are simply wonderful -- and that quilt on top of your table is beautiful too. Looks like artistry runs in the family!

Those are wonderful pieces - true treasures.

I, too, have a few pieces my father built in my sewing room, though his were not specifically made for storing sewing stuff. They are dear to me as are the many quilts my mother made. I let go of most of the stuff they bought over the years, but the things they actually made with their own hands I will keep forever.

What a marvelous carpenter your father was! Those dove-tailed drawers are wonderful.

I was fascinated that the upper shape of the sewing cabinet doors were identical to those of your china cabinet. If the china one were purchased later, this is amazing. I love the older things and feel that they connect us to our past.

They are wonderful!

What priceless jewels. Yes, that is a pretty tablecloth too. Lucky is the woman, who has a handy husband. I don't think in past years keeping a massive hoard of fabric was all that important. They bought, they sewed it up, and moved on to the next project.

Just beautiful! You are lucky to have such wonderful reminders of your mom and dad.

donnamcr 05-08-2014 09:46 AM

weasier22, your posting has made me well up with tears----such dear things you have to remember your dad. He must have loved your mother so much to make these beautiful things for her, and to make them with such careful craftsmanship. They would be happy knowing how you treasure them and how you are sharing their beauty with others.

Thanks so very much for this post.

What wonderful treasures - your father was very talented and did excellent work. Thanks for sharing.

What a treasure! Your dad was very talented. Mine was too and I have hung on to as many of his hand made items as I could. He was a true craftsman. He made my mother a beautiful jewelry box and a mantle clock. It makes me think of them both every time I look at them.

mjhaess 05-08-2014 06:55 PM

A real treasure...Enjoy them....

That's very good wood working! I hope they stayed in your family. Looks like creativity can be inherited!
