Trip to U.S.A.
Hi All,
My DH and I are planning trip to the states next year. We are going to do Route 66 on Motor bikes. We are both retired (over60) and would love any tips or places to visit along the way. I all so hope to visit a few quilt shop so any tips on the best to see would great. Thanks in advance. Cheers :D |
Fox Developmental Center in Dwight, Illinois. On the second floor they have a special kind of stain glass windows that you can not see from the outside.
|
there is a middle of the country yard sale. dont know when it is. try searching largest garage sale or something like that. might be fun.
|
48 years ago when my husband and I were first married, we lived in California and used to take Rt. 66 every summer back east on vacation. back then there was a lot to stop and see along the way, all kinds of small businesses, and tourist attractions. Hope you have a wonderful time while your here!
|
QLD ... are you doing it alone or going with Eagle Riders? Friends of ours from England did the R66 trip on rented Harley's with ER and loved it!!
You will be going within 2 blocks of my house :) |
We rode on Route 66 going from St. Louis to Route 48 to Decatur, IL. to visit my family. We made the trip lots of times. It was a 4 hour drive then, much shorter with Hwy. 55. I have no family there now, haven't for lots of years.
I hope you enjoy your trip. Route 66 is cut into pieces after the interstate system was implemented. |
U.S. is a beautiful country, but every part of God's world is beautiful in its own way. Have fun and enjoy our beautiful country.
|
The iconic Ariston Café in Litchfield, IL is a popular stop on Route 66 and they've opened a Route 66 museum right across the street from it. Litchfield also has one of the last remaining drive-ins on Route 66 and has classic car shows at it every year.
You might also look into Niehaus Cycles Customer Appreciate Days in Litchfield. It is generally in May. It is a HUGE gathering on motorcycles from all over everywhere. They have a beautiful parade of bikes and other activities. Also, Country Classic cars is a fun place to stop and stretch your legs. It is a car dealership that sells nothing but classics. I love to look at those cars. |
There is a guide book of quilt shops that I carry in my car. I have found some amazing places during my travels. You might google it, and it could be on the internet. Also, just google "quilt shops, Illinois" and you might get a listing. What fun... That sounds like a wonderful adventure!

Haven't lived in Amarillo, TX for a while but 66 used to go through the old part of Amarillo. Check out some of the clubs where the cowboys go. Sign will ask gentlemen to remove their hats and the furniture is bolted to the floor. 20 miles outside of Amarillo, on an interstate, is Canyon, TX. Check out Palo Duro Canyon, a few miles outside of Canyon. It is a miniature Grand Canyon and a state park and is a fantastic place to visit. You can camp there. In the summer it has a wonderful musical western show in a natural amphitheatre.

In Williams Arizona, is a cute quilt shop, west of Flagstaff and Flag is a nice town in its self. A terrific machine store is Odegaards that has been there several generations. They do carry fabric, etc.
Enjoy your trip! |
If you stop in Williams, Arizona, they have an old train that runs to the lodge at Grand Canyon. I hope you will take time to see the Grand Canyon. The fabric shop in Williams has downsized quite a bit so while it's still good, it's doesn't have the variety it used to. We travel the western part of route 66 before it turns north and we love all the quaint places along the way. I know you will have a good time.

Welcome to the USA.... here is a great website with a directory of all the shops in the different states with different events etc... not sure when you are coming but you may be able to see a quilt show or a shop hop of the stores along the way... enjoy the journey!!!
We used to be in the military and we had English neighbors in our base housing.... they thought they could see all of the USA in one month.... we just looked at them and smiled... they stayed for three years and took a one month vacation every year and still did not see it all.... loved it though and loved the sunshine we had!!! Enjoy.. hugs quiltinmama http://www.wrbqinc.com/directory.php |
My son used to live in Elk City, Oklahoma and they had a replica of a town during the Route 66 era as a museum. They have a calliope in their park encased in a glass building. There was a quilt shop there as well in a drapery shop! Enjoy your trip and welcome to our country!

I Love rt 66 but you might want to jump off just a bit while in the Flagstaff area and visit Sedon, oak creek canyon and Jerome ghost town. Not a lot of quilt shops but amazing places.
Also the yard sale is not really near rt 66 did that last year with the sisters its an experience all of its own. And not something I would do on a motor bike to many amazing things you couldnt purchase Hahahaha Google WLYS......worlds longest yard sale. When I did it we met a group from Europe that had been doing it for a few years the rent a lg van and every night would pack all thier treasures and mail it home the next day. They said it was like discovering it all over again when they got home and opened them up. |
When you get to Indiana stop in French lick & do some gambling there. It is the home of larry bird of the Celtics. If you get that far give me a call in paoli the next town over & I will meet you . Pm me & I will send tel. phone # & address. hehe but true. Have a safe trip & enjoy this beautiful God made country

If Tiger Mart (Can't remember the location, but you can't miss it) is still there, you must stop. The back wall of the store is all glass, with real tigers in the cages. Scared me silly to hear them before I saw them. Lol! Take the detour to the north rim of the Grand Canyon. So worth the trip. bring lots of sunscreen for the trip. My sister and I did old 66 from Amarillo, TX to Los Angeles, CA in 2001. Still the best trip ever! Thank you bratsisterjodie!

We have 3 great shops in Oklahoma City, and a couple just a few miles away. Would love to show them to you. We are close to Rt. 66. Also, 2 or 3 good ones in Tulsa, just up the highway! PM me!!

How wonderful for you and your husband. If you should get to the east coast, let me know. My husband and I know some great motorcycle rides in our area , and would be glad to give you some suggestions.
|
I live way north of Route 66 but my son and daughter in law went to school in Flagstaff Arizona which is on the route. I think you should definitely take a side trip to the Grand Canyon and Sedona in Arizona. I live in the lovely Pacific Northwest so if you come that far north I will have a bed for you! I'll even take you to the beach! Have a great trip!

There are so many beautiful and interesting places to see in this beautiful world God has graciously given us all. I want to welcome you both and here's wishing you a beautiful and safe trip and hope you enjoy visiting our great country. I have always wanted to go to Australia myself, probably never will, but have a dream to do so some day. |
Albuquerque, New Mexico has some quilt shops.
