My daughter and 3 grandchildren are here this week and I am trying not to sew!! It's surprisingly hard. I washed and dried the fabric for the next quilt on Saturday, that wasn't sewing. I did make 4 pin cushions and did the handwork downstairs, that's not quilting.

I was in the sewing room early on Sunday sewing the crazy quilt piece for a pincushion top. The 2 month old baby and the 20 month old were both asleep downstairs, the 9 year old was at her friends' aunt's b-day party, my daughter's bedroom door was closed and I assumed she was in there so... I went into the sewing room. Moments later my daughter comes in and tells me to "come out of the sewing world!" I said, "What else am I supposed to do? The babies are asleep, Brianna is gone, I thought you were in your bedroom..." She says she was putting her makeup on.

*sigh* I feel like I have to sit on my hands and not do anything that takes me away from interacting with them. It's just for a week and I feel sooo guilty that I want to sew.

LOL!

i can totally relate, DH said we should go to the lake house for a month.

i said we have to drive so i can bring all my sewing supplies.

how bad am i - a month on the lake and i want to spend it sewing.

pittsburgpam 05-12-2009 07:08 AM

That sounds like heaven... a month on the lake and spending it sewing. :D

sharon b 05-12-2009 07:12 AM

Been there , done that ! Is there anything you can do with your hands and still be able to talk and visit with them. Like portable hand quilting ? Good Luck.. I hate not having my hands busy :? Good Luck

Pam I completely understand - I don't go ANYWHERE for longer than a few hours without some hand sewing!

I know how you feel. Adult kids are worse then having bored teenagers around all day. I'm crazy about my grankids and prefer them here without the parents most times. But I'm nice and just put my mind and tongue on hold until their visit is over. We do have some great times all together every now and then.

k3n 05-12-2009 07:23 AM

Pam, just had a brainwave - pretend you've got the runs and lock yourself in the loo and sew!

Shemjo 05-12-2009 07:38 AM

It is hard to hold little guys and sew, but it can get really boring! :?
I vote with the loo idea! ROFL

bearisgray 05-12-2009 07:59 AM

I like the loo idea, too.

Ever notice how EVERYONE needs the bathroom when MOM is in it?????

mytwopals 05-12-2009 08:47 AM

So your daughter's visit is the reason we haven't seen any new larger projects come out of your sewing room this week? That'll give the rest of us time to catch up. :D Of course, in my case that'll take years and one week is just not going to be enough time. But enjoy their visit. Kids grow up so fast.

sewjoyce 05-12-2009 08:54 AM

Maybe you need to give your daughter sewing lessons???

sewnsewer2 05-12-2009 08:54 AM

Sounds like you are having withdrawals

LOL!!! That's an idea.

collettakay 05-12-2009 09:05 AM

I had to really fight the urge to take some hand-quilting to my daughter's softball game. I can't take it with me because I know I'll get so engrossed in it that I'll miss a big play in the game. Once I'm at the game, I spend the whole time cheering so I don't even miss the quilting. It crosses my mind every time though.

pittsburgpam 05-12-2009 09:13 AM

I have the pincushions I could make but that involves sewing the top part together on the machine. I'll be overrun with pincushions if I do that all week! I might start calling them Tribbles.

I could do some applique patterns that I got. 9 patterns of beautiful florals that I didn't know when I was ever going to get to.

Hmmm... that means a trip to Joann's (maybe at lunch today) to get white for the background and washing and drying the packets of fabrics I have in a rainbow of colors for the leaves and flowers.

k3n 05-12-2009 09:41 AM

Oh, those are stunning Pam - which ones did you get? The technique sounds interesting and intriguing! You will tell us all about it, won't you?!

K x

PS Take your computer in the loo as well - no webcam tho thanks!

sewjoyce 05-12-2009 09:45 AM

That's a really nice site Pam -- did you see the kit selection?? (Pre-washed and everything!!!)

I only use the webcam for seeing and talking to the grandkids in another state. And for one Special man in my life but... I won't go into particulars. :P

Of course I will share when I start working on them... that's part of the fun.

I got the corner version of all of these, only 9 of them, so I figure 3x3 with plain setting squares on-point.

Bird Of Paradise
Chrysanthemum
Columpine
Fuchsia
Lilac
Morning Glory
Squash Blossom
Tulip
Orchid

Ducky 05-12-2009 10:09 AM

Very lovely, Pam. I had to bookmark that website. .....groan....just another thing I just have to have....

k3n 05-12-2009 10:52 AM

Me too Ducky - I'm really interested in that appliqué technique - the web site doean't give much away, does it?

Love the ones you've chosen, Pam. I've thought of doing a flower of the month appliqué for years and have been collecting patterns - one day I'll get to it, there are a few contenders here, that's for sure!

I was about to say there is a State Flower link there but.... I don't guess that applies to France! :-)

I liked them especially because they are so delicate looking. Is there a flower of each month? There probably is some official one somewhere.

I was going to make it up to suit my garden.

Yea, Izy sewed in her bathroom once! lol

collettakay 05-13-2009 06:41 AM

I remeber those pictures! Hilarious!

JCL in FL 05-13-2009 12:38 PM

I totally understand. I do not have a separate room for my quilting and when people come to visit I have dismantle my sewing room and make it guest ready. Then I can't really go in and do things while they visit. I try to have some had stuff around to do. Being in Fl we do have company pretty often and I love it, but I think I should change the den into a sewing/den so I don't have to put it all away when guests come.

sandpat 05-13-2009 06:35 PM

Oh withdrawal!!!!! I think the loo idea is fabulous although I hope you remember to put the lid down  If I remember, Izy did say the light was really good.

Now I have to go back to check out that link you gave. (Huge sigh....) I'm sure it will be something I'll just have to buy!

Edit~ Yes, of course I have to try that!! That high profile applique sounds soo interesting! Have you done any Pam?

pittsburgpam 05-13-2009 10:02 PM

Nope, I haven't done any of them yet. I only opened up one of them and looked it over briefly.

I did get a couple of pieces of fabric starched and ironed tonight for the next quilt while I was waiting for my daughter to get ready to go to the store. :D Didn't even have to do it in the loo.

We have a cottage on a small lake where we move to for four monthe June - Sept. I love the lake, but always brought my sewing machine with me ...... I can't imagine 4 months without sewing! I'm excited because this year we are building a garage and above the garage I'm getting a ......yes, you guessed it ...... sewing room!

Grandma Cindy 05-15-2009 10:48 AM

pittsburgpam - those floral patterns are beautiful, they would be great for an instrutor to use. Hang in there Grandma, this too shall pass...

I take some hand work for 2 days camping at the beach. A month? I would go bonkers if I didn't have my stash. Besides, a beautiful setting can be VERY motivational.

I wish that I was as tempted to quilt as you are.

I was gone a lot this winter and I'm having a hard time getting back into quilting.
