TULIPS - This is amazingly beautiful!
At first glance, it looks like a giant child armed with a box of crayons has been set loose upon the landscape. Vivid stripes of purple, yellow, red, pink, orange and green make up a glorious Technicolor patchwork. Yet far from being a child’s sketchbook, this is, in fact, the northern Netherlands in the middle of the tulip season. With more than 10,000 hectares devoted to the cultivation of these delicate flowers, the Dutch landscape in May is a kaleidoscope of giddy colors as the tulips burst into life. The bulbs were planted in late October and early November, and these colorful creations are now ready to be picked and sold as bunches of cut flowers in florists and supermarkets. More than three billion tulips are grown each year and two-thirds of the vibrant blooms are exported, mostly to the U.S. and Germany . |
Wow! That is beautiful. I love how they make the designs and patterns with the different colors.

Not too long ago I watched a show called Wallender, set in Sweden and on one show they had a girl running and hiding in a field of some sort of tall yellow flower. as tall as she was. i always wondered what they were. not tulips anyway. |

Thanks, Ditter, for pushing a memory button in me. I spent part of my childhood living in the Netherlands. One of the things that stands out in my memory is our family trips to Lisse to enjoy the Keukenhof in the spring. Truly spectacular gardens known for their displays of tulips and other springtime favorites. I wandered out to their website after reading your post and thought I'd share it - http://www.keukenhof.nl/index/
Inspiration at every turn! |
My husband and I traveled to Europe the 1st of May in 1985, the Tulips looked just like that!!!they were just georgous!!! Wish I could go back.

Beautiful.
|
We once traveled to the Netherlands to see the tulips. They are gorgeous with varieties we'd never seen. Some blossoms were as big as my husband's hand. One word of advice if you think about going....remember tulips blossom in spring weather. I've heard of people who didn't think about it and went in the summer and were diappointed that they didn't see any tulips!

Lovely. I love tulips.

There is a tulip festival in Mt. Vernon, Wa. every

During WWII the Dutch royal family came to Ottawa to escape the Nazis. The queen gave birth to one of her daughters while being ln exile. Since after the war, the Dutch government sends thousands of tulips bulb to our government every year. They usually bloom the second week of May. The city is beautiful, that is now the Tulip Festival and you are welcome! Thanks Ditter, your beautiful pictures allowed me to mention a fact easily forgotten in Canadian history.
