My daughter and Granddaughter were coming home from the lake today and a turkey flew up and hit the windshield!!! When the initial shock wore off, Shyla just burst into tears(She is due to have her baby in a few weeks and gets emotional) So Teegyn says" Dont cry Mama! Mama its OK, see I have the feathers!!!!!!)   (The sun roof was open!!!!)

Kyiav10 05-25-2009 05:41 PM

Oh, my. Sorry that happened. They can cause such damage. I hope her ins. covers it b/c it's and act of GOD. Or maybe that's only home owners, I don't know.

I'm glad that they're ok. That would probably scare me half to death.

amma 05-25-2009 05:45 PM

Out of the mouth of babes    I am so glad that they are okay.... but what a horrible way to end a fun outing :( :( :(

mgshaw 05-25-2009 05:47 PM

I dont know about a turkey, but I know of some one that caught a rock and the ins. co. wouldnt pay, said it was road hazzard,

sandiphi 05-25-2009 05:50 PM

My husband hit a deer and our insurance covered it and a huge branch fell out of the tree and went through the windshield while he was driving and again, they covered it. Of course the insurance company charged us the deductible, but we fought it and won that, so we got reimbursed the full price of the repairs. I think it depends on whether or not you have comprehensive insurance.

Rhonda 05-25-2009 05:51 PM

Thank goodness they are all alright! Kids are so resilient aren't they?

sandiphi 05-25-2009 05:54 PM

I'm sorry I hit the submit button too fast, I also wanted to say, I am very happy to hear that your daughter and granddaughter are ok. It is a scary thing to hit an animal, especially one that hits the windshield.

Marcia 05-25-2009 06:45 PM

Oh, Melissa--how scary!!! I would have cried too-and I am not 8 months pregnant! I am SOOOO glad that Shyla and Teegyn are okay.

The insurance will cover it-my sister in law had a turkey fly into her car and rip the side mirror off. The insurance did not hesitate to pay. Of course, having the car repaired is not your first concern---the welfare of your family is all that matters.

littlehud 05-25-2009 06:51 PM

Thanks goodness they are both OK. What a mess that bird made of the windshield. Hope the insurance covers it.

Ninnie 05-25-2009 07:00 PM

Glad everyone is ok! What an exciting day. I thought insurance always paid for glass, not sure though.

OMG! What a scary thing to have happen. Glad the girls are ok. the car can be fixed. Kids say the darndest things! Save the feathers and frame them somehow! :?

bluebird 05-25-2009 07:18 PM

Sooo glad that the girls are alright, just the thought of what could have happened is scarey. A fellow out here had a buzzard go thru his windshield and he was seriously hurt. Someone was riding with them :D

eparys 05-25-2009 08:28 PM

I am SO glad everyone is OK. Turkeys are so dumb but they are clearly large enough to do damage.

It is OK for your daughter to be emotional - she had two pieces of precious cargo. Just think of the stories she will tell the new baby!!

tlrnhi 05-25-2009 08:55 PM

OMG! I'm glad they are ok! Must have been horrible!
Took cute what Teegyn said....kids. lol
What a story he will have to remember later in life.

We hit a deer on Rt 78 in PA, right outside of Wilkes Barre. Airbags deployed, the whole 9 yards. Lost the hood to the van too! Insurance paid on all of it....$8k worth of damage!

mgshaw 05-25-2009 09:00 PM

What I am wondering about on the insurance is if it will be cheaper to just get the windshield and my DH put it in, because she has a $500. deductible.

It would depend on the price, I would think.
If the windshield is going to cost say $500, then yes, buy it outright and have hubby put it in.
If it's going to cost $1000, then I'd pay the $500 deductable and let the insurance pick up the rest.

PrettyKitty 05-26-2009 01:20 AM

Ooooh how scary!!! Glad you are all ok.

Did the turkey survive? Or are you now happily munching on roast turkey?!?!?

barnbum 05-26-2009 01:25 AM

Oh goodness--I'm not pregnant and I would have burst into tears. What a brave granddaughter!! :D

Quilt4u 05-26-2009 01:32 AM

Glad every ons OK. I think I woud be crying too.

Chele 05-26-2009 03:45 AM

So happy there were no injuries. Except to the silly turkey! Your granddaughter is so wise and brave! I would have been crying.

Usually, insurance companies cover windshields 100% with no deductible.

sandiphi 05-26-2009 04:15 AM

Your daughter can dispute the $500.00 deductible, she can say it was beyond her control that a turkey flew out in front of her. They should drop that deductible and the windshield should be paid in full. But, if she has collision on her insurance policy, that $500.00 deductible shouldn't come into play if only the windshield is broken. If there is damage to other parts of the car then that's when the $500.00 comes into effect. But, if I were her I would dispute the deductible. She should win.

I did, when my husband hit a deer and when the branch fell out of the sky and went through the windshield. The insurance company dropped the deductible. Thank God my husband wasn't a little more to the right of the lane, he probably would have been impaled by that branch.

But, tell her to dispute it. That turkey was beyond her control.

sandpat 05-26-2009 04:37 AM

EEEwWwwww Melissa! I'm soo relieved that nobody was hurt! That happens around here all the time. Several of our friends have hit them but I'm not sure on the insurance.

You might want to also think about if you can afford to just fix the windshield...not turning it in at all...you know it goes on your record...premiums do go up and all that. If thats all the damage, I might consider just fixing it myself and goin' on down the road...clearly watching for turkeys of course.

Justquilting 05-26-2009 04:37 AM

How scary!! Glad the girls are ok!!

sajackson 05-26-2009 04:41 AM

Your right...turkeys are dumb...For everything negative that happens there IS a positive...Thank goodness everyone BUT the turkey are ok. My only question is......what's for dinner tonight? heeheee

roflol after I hit submit - the ad at the bottom was for Windshield replacements...how funny!

Bevanger 05-26-2009 05:47 AM

OH MY GOODNESS. THANK GOD NO ONE WAS HURT.

Tink's Mom 05-26-2009 06:49 AM

 I'm sorry, can't help it  Out of the mouth of babes

Thank God your daughter and the babies are fine! Cars can be fixed.
Don't blame your daughter for the tears, I would have too...

Please write this down in BOTH of the baby books! With the feathers, it's a keeper!

mytwopals 05-26-2009 09:16 AM

If you can prove the damage was caused by an animal, in this case a turkey, it'll fall under your Comprehensive coverage. And the deductible will be the Comprehensive deductible, not the collision deductible. But check your policy's Comprehensive coverage wording to be certain.
