This is my 8yo ds and our 5mo Great Pyr pup. They love each other so much! And yes the pup, Tucker, really is 5 months old in this pic! I'm expecting him to top out at about 140lbs when full grown. This is our 2nd pyr. We lost our 1st one to heart disease this past year. It broke everyone's heart. Dh decided right away that we had to get another. Tucker has definitely carved his spot in our hearts. These dogs get really big but are gentle giants....unless you mess with their kids! Tucker won't be full grown till about 2 years of age but he is already "guarding" the kids. He lets anyone walking down the road know that he is on duty and they better leave his family alone. My dh works out of twon all week and having a dog that watches us is helpful. I know that at night no one is going to be sneaking around the house. And oh the bark Tucker is getting. He's loosing his puppy squeak and getting his big dog bark. That booming bark will wake the dead in the middle of the night lol!

My uncle breeds and sells Great Pyrenese puppies to good homes all over the southeast. They are the sweetest dogs ever.

ginnie6 02-02-2010 08:12 AM

yes they are sweeties. the kids literally laid all over Bandit and are now doing it to Tucker. The dog just lays there and licks on them. If they get too rough he just gets up and moves. I was for years literally petrified of big dogs. I had 18 stitches from a dog we had growing up. Took dh years to convince me to get a lab. They are WAY too much energy for me! When it came time to get another dog I researched for months, talked to pet pyr owners, and went back and forth over the decision. Dh ONLY likes big dogs but the kids safety was foremost. After talking and reading and reading we chose a pyr and have not regretted the decision. They are wonderful with kids....course I'd hate to see what would happen if Tucker thought someone was hurting one of the children. And its funny the woman who was so scared of dogs now has 3 and all are in the house!

What a beautiful dog and a very handsome son. :) They both look so happy and seem to be best friends already. Tucker seems like a very good protector.

What a fabulous photo! What a big dog! I love his name. (I have a Tucker in colt.)

How do you deal with the hair???

amma 02-02-2010 12:45 PM

Adorable picture :D:D:D
Your DS is precious and puppy??? Holy Cow he is almost a moose LOL I have seen many of these gentle giants  and had to put one in another room if I wanted to verbally discipline "their" kids LMBO but it was awesome knowing they could be in the yard playing and no one was going to mess with them :D:D:D

ginnie6 02-02-2010 01:00 PM

well when they shed hair is a pain! we vacuum lots then and dh forbade me to brush him in the house when he's shedding! lol! I would always take Bandit outside and brush him....the yard was white by the time I was done. And yes it is nice knowing that I can send them out back to play and no one will bother them. Our yard is fenced but our neighborhood has gone to pot in the last 5 years. Some seriously rough stuff going on around here and sadly at this time we cannot sale for several reasons....one being an addition that is unfinished that we are doing ourselves.

What a cute puppy!! I love big dogs. I currently have 3 labs but love the Grt Pry too!!! And Newfoundland's too!
Your son is a cutie too!!

Marjpf 02-02-2010 04:34 PM

How sweet! Nothing like the love of a puppy and a boy.

tlrnhi 02-02-2010 05:01 PM

How beautiful Tucker is!
He sure will be a big boy!

My daughter has an English Bull Mastif. Max is HUGE, but like you say...a gentle giant UNTIL someone "pisses" him off. I would take Max for a walk and if another dog even tried to approach, Max would let out this bark as if he was saying to "stay away". Dogs and people would not come near unless I told Max to sit and be still. Then others could approach.
I'm sure once the babies get bigger, he'll surely be the "big brother" and protect them.
I never liked big dogs either. I'm a cat person, but funny thing....when hubby retires, I told him he can have a dog and guess what I want him to get? A Great Dane! lol

ginnie6 02-02-2010 05:20 PM

well I used to be a cat person but when my 20yo cat died I've just not found another I could bond too. Our first pyr though.....oh man that was my baby. I cried for weeks after he died.

tlrnhi 02-02-2010 05:22 PM

Maybe I'll let hubby see your pup and see what he says. I'm sure he'll say something about "all that fur", but heck, my house is covered in cat fur! lol

Greendragon6889 02-04-2010 07:53 AM

It looks like he's saying "stay where I put you" LOL

Of course they are all in the house . . they are members of the pack. My DH only sorta liked small dogs. When we lost our Westie he agreed to a little larger dog finally. Went from 1 shelty/border collie mix and added 2 australian shepherds. He went from a guy not keen on dogs to 3, thank heaven. Your guys are awesomly hansom.

ragqueen03 02-04-2010 05:40 PM

what a great picture. i love those dogs - had never heard of them until i "found" one in my yard. they truly are gentle giants. we did find the owner.

Debbie1 02-05-2010 07:06 AM

Both are such cute boys!

dsj 02-05-2010 08:17 AM

They are both adorable. GP's are the most loveable dogs, They love to cuddle. Friends of ours have one who loves to climb on me and lay down. I am a bit smaller than him, quite a lot smaller than him and I am completely lost under him. He takes me by surprise every time. He is so sweet I don't have the heart to push him off or the strength. Tucker will be your son's best friend ever.
