My husband and I went last Saturday and purchased a new sofa and recliner. It was delivered about an hour ago and let me tell you the "few furniture"/ Chemical smell is about to kill me. I was fine before it got here and now I feel like I am going to ralph all over the stuff. lol At this point I almost wish we would have kept the other stuff.

Does anyone know how long it takes to get this smell out and how I can speed up the process?
I live in an apartment so not like I can toss it in the carage for a few days until it airs out but man I sure do wish!

Maybe run one of the vacuum attachments over it or Febreeze?

I have the windows open, and the couch is right in front of the window. ugh this stuff stinks! The kids don't seem to be effected by it. but I think we are going to get outta here for awhile!

I might have to get out and run to walmart for some febreeze. Bleach smells better than this stuff. lol

I'd call the place that I got it from. I have not had a problem with smelly furniture before.................carpet now that is another story. I can't take the odors from that, but it does go away.

What type of fabric is it? or could it be the padding in it? If it is the padding then it may be there for a long time..............call the place you got it from.......maybe it is something in the furniture itself. I redo furniture for a living and I don't have anything go out that smells!!

I have returned coffee pots that have a bad odor and no matter how much vinegar added to it, the smell did not go away. I took it back. I know that is small compared to the furniture, but if you can't handle it, have it replaced!!

Febreze is NOT the answer. It just adds another smell to the one already there.

Get an air purifier to filter out the chemicals. It may take hours, but even a small one can be powerful.

The best thing might be an ozone generator. It works something like an air purifier, but besides filtering the air, it breaks down chemicals. Hotels use them to get rid of cigarette odor in rooms. Some auto body shops use them to freshen car interiors. They are wonderful, but I'm not sure where you'd get one. Maybe see if you could rent one.

You could try vacuuming the upholstery, maybe even using some carpet cleaner on a small section of it to see if that helps.

I don't think new furniture should stink. There might be some chemicals that spilled on it or something.

Call the store and see if they can do something about it.

DO NOT USE FEBREZE on it. (Personal opinion - if you want to return it, don't tamper with it)

I checked on line and the best recommendation I found was to rent a steam cleaner and steam some of those chemicals out. My family is extremely allergic to those kind of things (I'm not so much), so I understand how you react. Hey - the steam cleaner would also work IF you ralfed. lol

I use charcoal for any problem odors. I set charcoal brickettes from our grill supplies in an open container and set it under the ordorous object or beside it. We had some new things that smelled and the charcoal absorbed the smell, good luck.- Did the furniture smell at the store where you bought it? If not have them check it out, maybe something happened to your furniture.
We had our fridge freezer go out and fish thawed, it was the worst smell ever- thought we would have to throw the fridge out- used the charcoal and the smell disappeared.

i wouldn't do anything with it now. i would complain to the store first and see what they'll do, but if you've done anything, they may not take
responsibility. if they tell you the smell will go away in a few (days - weeks - months) make them write it down so you have recourse later, or when they fire the manager. or when they deny they ever said it.

in the meantime, i would air it out the best i could, use charcoal if i could, but not use anything that adds any odor. i wouldn't spend money on a filter for something the store should make better for you.

I agree, the store should do something to fix it. I am sensitive to smells sometimes that no one else notices! :?

Did you have them treat it with a stain resistor??? If so that is probably what the smell is and it does go away within a week or so...if you clean it you will lose the protectant... I put a fan blowing on mine and cracked windows open to air the room and the furniture out.

Well ladies I am happy to say that I left the house OPEN with a couple fans in the window sucking the air out, we went and played at a friends house for a while. I called the store where I got it and they said it was just from the warehouse, it doesn't bother most people and most people doesn't even notice it, but if I still noticed it when I got home they would be happy to do something about it. When I came home the house didn't smell any more. It wasn't a stench it was......hmmm I don't know how to explain it, you know a new car smell, well this was kinda like this but it was "harsher".

The material is actually 100% polyester. BUT it is the faux bomber jacked leather look. We have two cats, a dog, and three kids, we love real leather exp. the stuff that looks real old. But this is "safer". lol. It doesn't stain, and it doesn't rip easily like leather can when the cat gets on it!

I love the furnitue NOW! I need to make a couch quilt, and some pillows fo it! lol
