Is this unusual??

Here it is the middle of April and my Christmas Cactus is loaded with blooms. It has more than it did in Dec. It is just beautiful!!

quiltstringz 04-15-2014 10:43 AM

Maybe with all of the crazy weather it thinks Christmas is around the corner!

Onetomatoplant 04-15-2014 10:43 AM

Are you sure it's a Christmas Cactus? It might be an Easter Cactus, which is very similar but blooms this time of year. I'm in western PA, and it snowed here this morning  - if you guys are experiencing the same, goofy weather, maybe your cactus is confused. I know I am!

Jackie Spencer 04-15-2014 10:48 AM

No it is a Christmas Cactus. Has always bloomed at Christmas time. I have had it for 10 years or more, and is huge. Flowers are probably 3 or 4 inches long before they open all the way. Beautiful bright pink color.

nativetexan 04-15-2014 11:47 AM

Mine just bloomed. only three blossoms though. Before that it bloomed just before ThanksGiving! To get mine to bloom before, I had to put it into the basement a couple of weeks. now, I have no idea what it's doing.

decky 04-15-2014 12:30 PM

Mine bloomed from Oct to Feb, took a break and is now blooming again. We turn our heat way down at night and I think that may be why it has bloomed this time around. I think it likes the cooler room!!

Mine bloomed at Christmas, then sat by itself, barely watered, ignored in a cool room for 3 months....now it's blooming again!

My salmon-colored Christmas cactus is also starting to bloom.

alleyoop1 04-16-2014 02:42 AM

My 4 Christmas cactus only had a few blooms at Christmas and are continuing to bloom. I blamed it on where I had them. I moved them and they weren't near a window. Now they are near a window. Hoping for a beautiful display this coming winter. They usually are in full bloom around Thanksgiving and continue through Christmas. Perhaps they need to be fed. Will have to research that online.

There are actually three -- Thanksgiving (frequently sold as Christmas), Christmas, and Easter. My Easter is blooming a deep red. I have had my Christmas bloom more than one time. It all depends on the amount of dark hours where it is sitting.

Mine did the same thing.

I use to have One? and I have no idea which, but I could get my to bloom almost anytime but withholding the water.
Between times, good fertilizing/water regime.

My Mom has one that does the same thing.. Spectacular blooms always this time of year.

Geri B 04-16-2014 04:59 AM

Mine, which I have had for many yrs, always bloomed before Christmas, this year not, and it seems to be dying......what to do? Move it, stop giving it water, fertilizer? Help!

trolleystation 04-16-2014 07:52 AM

Mine loves the window it is in and has bloomed several since I brought it into the house in October. I just enjoy it whenever it blooms. This is a pink. In the same window, I have a coral and a white and they have not bloomed. Go figure......

Snooze2978 04-16-2014 08:39 AM

I have a cactus I don't know which it is as its bloomed in different times of the year. One year in November and this year its blooming in April. Oh well, just like that it blooms at all.

The cactus bloom after several weeks of dryness and the length of time they have light they can be forced to bloom by putting thrm in a dark closet for 2 to 3 weeks then bring them out water and place them in the light

silverfoxmag 04-16-2014 09:48 AM

My cactus is ages old, it was my deceased sisters and it blooms winter and spring. Does anyone know the proper way to repot one, it looks like it could use it, soil is very hard and old.

carolynjo 04-16-2014 12:17 PM

I have 3 cacti; my ivory one blooms only at Christmas. My red one and my shocking pink one has bloomed continuously since Christmas.

gramma nancy 04-16-2014 06:08 PM

Mine blooms at Thanksgiving. Maybe they need another name ?!

Judie 04-16-2014 08:00 PM

My Christmas cactus is also full of blooms.. It bloomed for Christmas, but not covered.. now it's going to bloom again!! Silly plant, doesn't it know it's time to take a rest?

They need light (and dark, but that's another question)... but not direct light. They are a succulent so they don't like a lot of water! I almost accidentally killed mine by overwatering! I'm not sure about fertilizer?

julybaby8 04-17-2014 05:37 AM

My Christmas cactus has bloomed at times other than Christmas. It probably has to do with the amount of natural light it gets and maybe withholding water. Mine thrives on neglect :)

KimmerB 04-17-2014 05:56 AM

Mine is 38 years old it was an engagement present and blooms 3 times every year, the same as Aurora's. I thought I killed it in 1978 and I tossed the pot and plant under the back deck. Two years later, we replaced the deck and the plant was blooming and beautiful! I have transplanted it several times and it has moved to 3 different houses and 2 states. Still beautiful! It does best when I ignore it

Stitchit123 04-17-2014 06:53 AM

We lived in Indy for 20 years and my Christmas cactus bloomed at all times of the year. It was the center piece for one 4th of July. When we moved back to Toledo, Ohio it never bloomed again and it died. I always figured it died from depression.

judith ann 04-18-2014 07:06 AM

A lot depends on light and watering.

judith ann 04-18-2014 07:11 AM

This plant is a Thanksgiving cactus. There are Easter and Christmas cactus plants. If you do a search you can find pictures of the differences.

just joan 04-19-2014 02:56 AM

I had a Christmas cactus that would some times bloom just before Thanksgiving right after New Year and around Easter. They don't care what time of the year it is. Just enjoy the beautiful blooms. I dod.

OldHairTwister 04-19-2014 08:55 PM

I have three that always bloom beautifully between Thanksgiving & Christmas. And low and behold, one of them has been blooming for the last week:D

romanojg 04-20-2014 03:52 AM

My "Christmas" catus blooms in the spring and the fall. When summer hits, I put it in the flower garden, in the pot and out of the sun, I ignore it all yr and then in late fall I move it to the steps with partial sun until right before it might freeze. The cold weather makes it want to bloom again. Works all the time.

IBQUILTIN 04-22-2014 01:34 PM

Sometimes these weather changes make plants hyper pollinate(spelling) and they bloom twice, my Clematis is doing the same thing
