A friend just emailed me wanting to know what she could do with some old "dainty" handkerchiefs besides making pillows. I don't have a clue, BUT, I do know a group of people who are very, very crafty and thought some of you might have some ideas for her. Would appreciate any help you could give!

FRame them?

If a good source of dried flowers/herbs is available they would make beautiful sachets.

LOL!!! I read it first as "Dirty" old hankies. I was thinking, well - Yuck!! Wash them first.

Thanks for the help so far... I SURE hope she has already washed her DIRTY DAINTY handkerchiefs! LOL! I like all the ideas so far; the quilt looks great. I didn't ask her how many she has, but guess that will also have a lot to do with what can be done with them. Still looking forward to any other ideas. If I let her think I came up with all these ideas, she'll think I'm SMART! Yeah, sure. I'll tell her where I'm looking for help. You folks always come through!

I made a quilt from hankies. I found many of them at garages sales and antique stores.

This is what I did with mine

There is a pattern for making them into butterflies for a quilt. I have a magazine with it in it.

I found a lovely quilt with teapots and teacups on it. The dainty hankies were placed under the teacup and hung loosely from the quilt or possibly wall hanging. It was really pretty. The hankies added dimension to it. This isn't it, but I'm getting closer to finding it: http://www.etsy.com/listing/52633466...lt-pattern-new

I'm collecting them to do a quilt and use them as skirts for Umbrella ladies. I also purchased a set of era ladies from Embroidery Library where you have the ladies body and you use them as skirts...Can't wait to do those projects...On the "too do list"

Oh wow! She is going to be impressed! I can't wait to show her all of these ideas. Have to go to town now with a friend (OBGYN visit; I get to keep the older child while she is in with the doctor), but I'll get these to her ASAP. All look like great ideas to me! Thanks so much!

Please tell her to keep a couple of the prettiest white ones for her daughters to use as the "something old" when they get married, and if she is fortunate enough to have a black one she will probably want to keep it to carry when she attends a funeral service. It will be so much nicer to use than to pull out a kleenex to wipe away the tears. In fact there are so many occasions that having a beautiful hanky in your purse is so much classier than having a tissue.

Nancy Zieman of Sewing with Nancy did a couple of shows on how to embellish blouses with vintage hankies. Programs 2325 and 2326 are the two shows she did this on.

Here's a link to the show information.

Thank all of you so much! I am going to send her a link so she can read over these and look at them. I know she will excited at the different ideas. Y'all are the best!
