Using Burlap
 

There are so many neat Christmas things you can make with burlap. I would like to try a few of them but have a question about using burlap. Do you wash it first? It seems like as soon as you touch it there are little hairy fabrics everywhere. I'm also wondering how much of this stuff gets down into the machine.

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated!

I have sewn with burlap without any problem. Don't wash it! It will change it totally and shrink it really a lot!

Not to mention .....ravel!

A lady at Hancock's told me they are selling a lot of burlap, and that it has become very popular with crafters again, but she didn't say what they are doing with it. I have been curious as to what is being made with it.

I love country primitive, and burlap fits right in there! I made curtains, doilies, and put a piece across a bath towel(just for décor!), also for fun, a 'makedo' of a bee hive. BUT!! it is very 'fuzzy'..had to clean my machine & surroundings a lot. I made purses in the past also..

Can't use burlap and steer clear of it as it tends to trigger my asthma...due to all the dust and fuzz that comes with it.

It is the new material for wreaths and they are really pretty.

Cutting burlap is very tricky! You need to cut a notch on both sides of a string at the bottom---------then PULL that string out. This will leave what looks like a railroad track where you removed that string from. Then cut in that track. This is the ONLY way you can get a straight cut.
