A long time ago in Simply Quilts there was a lady on that showed how to make lacy type shapes with thread and then melting the stablizer just leaving the thread.
Does anyone know who that was?

do you mean free standing lace? I know it is done with an embroidery machine but not sure what the lady on Simply quilts did...

Sulky threads just did a demo/class for our guild. He explained how to use their stablizer that disolves in water. You can just stitch the outline (onto the stablizer) and then stitch and other lines you want, do alittle fmq for effect. Then just stick it into water. The stablizer disolves and you have your shape left. Just be sure you completely connect all the outside lines so there is an actual shape after the stablizer is disolved.

Thanks Kat... This is what I have in mind to do. I want to do leaf shapes. I was hoping someone remembered the name of the guest on the show simply so I could have more detail. I know it sounds simple but they did do a whole show on it. lol I guess trial and error is in order

I just got a new machine and have been trying this for the past few days. I got some designs from emlibrary.com and they have project sheets to show how it's done. Mine keep messing up so now I'll call my viking LQS and get a lesson from the lady there that teaches about my machine. Good luck; since I'm failing at this I'll be checking out the answers here.

I have made some freestanding items. So here goes.

very cute; my first time trying I knew my mistake right away, I forgot to change the needle and it was too large; then I tried again and it worked for a while and then it pulled the thread under the plate and hung up. I spoke to my rep and she told me to use the clips that came with my machine and that should help. I did and the first wing of my angel was almost done and then it did the same thing. Then I tried using ultra solvy since it's heavier and also using a single hole plate and that was worse yet. I'm so frustrated; I'm doing it just as the project sheet shows with no luck. I won't give up but it'd be nice to be able to get some of these projects done that are slated for Christmas gifts.

Looks great. I did Christmas ornaments a few years ago and used them as tags on gifts.
