so, can anyone recommend a good lqs in the dominican republic? ;) :?

I went to DR 3 years ago for 7 days. It is is surely not a pebble. I went with a hiking association of which I am a member. We did lots of tours, hikes, visit waterfalls and river rafting. We also went to Pico Duarte. It too us 3 days to go to the top and return. It is the highest mountain in the caribbean area. It is 10,417 feet high. We stayed in the country area. I enjoyed the trip very much and would go back there in the future.

Hope you enjoy your visit there also.

Oh yeah, there was a rafting day trip and somethign about caves and waterfalls too, but we could only afford one day trip :( I really wish we could have done more, it's a beautiful place!

Just googled, looks great! Here's a link with some tips http://www.puertoplata.com/id4.html

It includes that you have to buy a tourist pass when you land at the airport- 10 USD per person which lasts up to 30 days. Didn't know if you knew that. :-D

Also, practice your Spanish - here's some phrases:

Donde està el bar? - Where is the bar?
Dos cervezas, por favor. - Two beers please.
Gracias. - Thanks.
Holà, guapo! - Hiya handsome guy! (David needs to say 'guapa' if he sees a nice girl! )

Should just about cover it!

  donde este el bano? that covers me.

$10 to get in - $30 to get out.

If the sun's so bad you can be burned even with sunblock, take some vitamin E capsules. Swallow them, don't just squeeze the liquid inside on your burns. That's ineffective. Take one before going ouside each day, and that will protect you (along with the sunblock).

If you do get burned, take one as soon as you can after that, and maybe another one an hour or so later, and it cuts sunburn pain wayyy down and promotes healing.

Don't forget your digital camera! We will expect pictures of you and David - and the island, of course.

Have fun and stay safe, but don't miss the chance to venture out to the part of the island where the real people live.

This is a site that has many translations of "where is the toilet?"

My DH was on over-the-road truckdriver - and I rode with him for about a year - I think I slept about 75% of the time - DH is hearing impaired and that $%^&*( CB would blare every time I opened my mouth -

I got so I would know where we were by the restrooms. They varied from very very nice - to - I am so desperate that any receptacle will do.

This is the one with the chipped wood doors and smells bad - this is the one that's waywayway down a long hall - this one has the paper on the door for people to write on - the door is really close on this one, my knees are touching it when I sit down - this one doesn't even have doors - - -

my pettest traveling peeve - dribbled on toilet seats ---

a great philosopher once said "i sleep, therefore i am."

yes, i'm a little nuts about public bathrooms also. the cleanest ones i ever saw were in italy, but that was 20 years ago. so many more people travel now, so who knows?
