My first hubby and I used to camp with two of my male cousins, their families and a female cousin and her male companion. Those three men and I did all the cooking, cleaning, building fires, setting up, tearing down, etc. I never did figure out how those women got their husbands to do everything while they sat and talked. The hardest thing my husband did was to sit and open yet another beer.

Been there. Done that. Still loved my hubby all our
39 1/2 years till his passing.

BUT there was his marvelous BBQ skill. He did, I'll admit,
cook a mean steak that would melt in your mouth.

ALL I had to do was shop for it and all the "few other things"
make sure we had plenty of charcoal, and the grill cleaned,
drag all the dishes, tableware, glasses, drinks, ice, cooler,
spices plus salt and pepper, meat sauces, fix dessert, put
together lots of neat greens for salad, mix up family's favorite
salad dressing with real blu cheese. And of course bring out the
all time favorite, a couple of giant watermelons so the Chef
could show off his knife work on them.
Then, after everyone had eaten their fill and were sitting around
telling him what a marvelous cook he was, I was busy removing
every dish we owned back to the kitchen, bringing in tableware,
breaking up fights between our two Doberman Pinchers who both
thought they owned all the the left over bones and meat, wiping
up grease spills, wiping off the pans and cleaning those that could
not go into the dish washer...oh, and just a few things else that
had to be done, so that I could go out and with others in the family
tell him what a marvelous cook HE was!!
In spite of that, I still miss him these 3 long years, and would do
it again any time.

all I can say is dead man walking. hehe hope your trip is fun to make up for it.

Sounds like the work is about done so go camping and have a wonderful time. I can understand why he'd want to go since you haven't been for so long. He probably had no clue how much work would be involved for you but knew that all of you would enjoy this special time together.

I'm so sorry you lost your husband, and just when he had become a great cook! That is so unfair. Although you do now have your very own special angel looking over you. Yes, we do have to do our fair share and their fair share of the work. My hubby used to be better about helping but now he does good if he can walk from one end of the house to the other. I'm very blessed to still have him but we know that our time is limited, so we try to make the most of it. Spending this weekend with the family means a lot to him and the family, and I know some day I'll look back on all of this and laugh. Sometimes the memories are worth all of the hard work.

Glad it is you and not me, I hate every part of camping and/or roughing it however its done. I've gotten much worse since I've gotten older. He goes to our cabin and I stay home, works great for us. We spend all but about 12 hours a week together, he only goes a few days a year now.

Could I have a chance to vent??? I've spent two weeks doing laundry almost every day, packing for DD, DH and myself, making lists, checking things off, doing the grocery shopping, cleaning the car, cleaning the house and today, packing everything in the car to leave on vacation while he yelled and griped about EVERY move I made. Now that everything is done, he's all nice, sweet and joking around but by this time I just want to unpack the car and stay home. The only thing that keeps me going is that since he didn't do any shopping for Mothers Day he said that I'd probably find something on vacation that I wanted. Do you think I should take his credit card to Marshall Dry Goods?
That's what I'm leaning toward.

You're right about that. The only thing that's keeping me going right now is the promise of Marshall Dry Goods. LOL He got up out of bed a few minutes ago and went off on one of his little tantrums because I had laid a two quarters and a hair brush on his computer table. I was sitting right there using the computer and was going to move the stuff when I got up. Now isn't that something to cuss and scream about? He acts like this every time we try to go on vacation. That's why I've left him home for the past two years. LOL
You'd think he'd be more pleasant since we're going to see his son. He'll be fine once we get started. I don't know, sometimes I think he's bipolar or something.
