For any of you along the east coast in the middle of the mess, our hearts and prayers are with all of you. If there is ANYTHING at all we can do to help, let us know. Red Cross people are headed there this morning from other parts of the country, but we would like to help, too, in some way.

That is so sweet of you. Last night I was up watching the specials on channel 13 and 10. To see how bad Queens and other areas of NY and NJ got it really made me count my blessings even more. The only thing that I worried about and knew would happen was my roof leaking. It needs to be replaced but will be awhile before I can afford that. Even though some of our area had some damage it is so minor compared to what it could have been and especially to what others had happen to them. I cried and prayed for them all. God bless all the caring people in the world and even the ones who don't care so that maybe one day they'll understand. You don't have to know someone to care or feel for them and what they've gone thru.

I think gift cards for food and essentials is more important right now than a "stash". Let insurance take care of that part.

I'm originally from New Orleans, land of hurricanes. Not everything is totally ruined, by flooding. Non-electrical things can often be washed and returned to use. Fabric & clothing can be washed and disinfected. Immediate needs are usually fresh water, food, clean clothing (until power is restored), batteries and things of that nature.

You are right Chasing Hawk. Your suggestion is so much better than mine. Your reference to insurance made me realize that I should contact my insurance guy and ask him about making sure that my herd/hoard of vintage and new sewing machines are covered under my home owner's insurance. One never knows.

Here in central NJ things are relatively good. Many downed trees and power lines. We lost power at 6:30PM Mon. and are still out. Best guestimate for restoration currently is Mon. 11/5. We had a tree go into the wires in front of our house and it pulled the wires from the insulators on the pole so I imagine we'll be out longer that most as our street is not overly populated. Many of the downed trees are into houses and cars. Our damage very minimal - a small piece of flashing on the side of the house, a large trellis/vine, and a couple of tree limbs. We have a generator and gas heat/hot water/cooking. So, while things are not 'normal' we do have heat, hot shower, can cook and haven't lost any food yet. Others here, and certainly more so in other parts of the state, are in far worse shape. Our coastline has been destroyed not only by erosion, but virtually every structure; home; lots of infrastructure are no more. Being without power for a few days is nothing by comparison.

And, sorry for the personal rant, but when you are told by the powers that be to evacuate - DO IT! When you don't, you're putting my DH's life on the line. And many other first responders. Please don't make me a widow unnecessarily. Your stuff is STUFF! I'd be sad to lose things as well. I get it when something freakish happens that could not be foreseen. In this case - not so for many, many people. OK - rant over.

I'm in southern NJ...we lost power for about 15 hours monday-tuesday. all are find. my sister (in monmouth county) is still without power, as are my parents home (in somerset county).

NJ Quilter-if you need anything let me know! i understand that finding gas is becoming challenging.

My thought and prayers are with everyone in the affected areas. I have lots of family members in NJ, Long Island, and PA.

I live just north of Baltimore MD. We lost power for about 24 hours and were very blessed to get it back so soon. My prayers and thoughts to everyone who was affected by Sandy.

I live in the Village of Mastic Beach on Long Island's south shore. Fortunately, my home is about a thousand feet north of the bogs and Great South Bay - I did not suffer any major damage, but hundreds of neighbors just south of me have been completely devastated. The storm surge brought the ocean rushing up the road, passing my property. It only seeped onto my lawn a few feet feet and my power was out for nearly 24 hours. A quarter mile away, people have lost EVERYTHING. Homes were swept off their foundations - people did not get out in time and those stories end the worst possible way. It's taken all this time for the waters to recede enough to be able to walk along the shore. I'm going to try to bicycle around my neighborhood to check on my friends. We appreciate all your thoughts and prayers.

I so agree with you. It's inconsiderate, uncaring, rude and irresponsible not to think about the first responders' lives.

NJ Quilter, thank you for truer words. One person's decision to stay put does affect others. Stay safe, all.

I prayed for them to be safe and I think when we do hear from other QB members that were in the storms path we could help in some way.

My NJ friend few to LA days before the storm to help family --now her house may be destroyed --I could only help
by getting her some email/phone information. I'm in Fl but she was to be here in Dec.
Naturally, she didn't take a lot of info with her since she was flying away for 2 weeks. She had extensive work done
on her house all summer and just finished last month. Her home not an extra summer place.
Can't find the condition of her house because no one can get there yet. Hope all those people with destroyed homes had insurance.

I heard they need warm clothing and perhaps a good coverlet. Maybe this could get organized so someone could get it shipped to them.

I would love to do something for those affected by Sandy, but not sure as to what. If anyone is organizing donations let me know.

NJQuilter, I understand how you feel things can be replaced. I live in Fl. and lived thru 2 wks w/o power from Hurricane Charley. I believe that if they tell you to leave take a few important things to you and get out. Don't put someone else's life in danger or lose your own life over things that can be replaced it's very hard to go thru and you never forget but you do realize from all the people, neighbors and friends that people all pull together to help each other. When one of us went to get water or ice where the National Guard was stationed to take care of us we always brought back for all our neighbors and if someone needed help we helped them. We had a tiny battery operated radio to listen to in the dark to find out what would be available to us everything was destroyed in our towns so we had that one radio station that could broadcast and no phones so as I watch all the pics I realize that during Charley everyone saw us and we knew nothing. We all had to be in by 8pm but it was so dark you couldn't see anthing in front of you. There are some parts that are really not fun in our case no AC and 90 degree heat with sun blazing on you as you raked up all the garbage that flew in from who know's where. Try if you can to relax and be with others so you can talk about other things because the more you think about it the more upset you get. You do get better as the days go by and you have to get busy getting back to your new life whatever it will be and we are all thinking & praying for you all and as days go by people will have donated so all of you who will need help will get it. I hope the days get better for you all their are plenty of lineman being brought in to help and the National Guard, Red Cross and volunteers with food and water and other things. You probably won't even know this because if you don't have power you can't read this but it will give you some thoughts later. Bless you all. Sue

We have a 12 yo grandson in Maryland. Have not heard anything about him or his mom. His dad is our son and he is in Afghanistan. Our son has remarried and only gets to see his son once a year or so because of where he is stationed. We were able to be together last Thanksgiving. My heart goes out to all of you in dire need. Please know you are in our prayers and thoughts and we will help where we can.
